NBA History in the Making 🏀

My philosophy for sure is just being consistent…I want to finish everything. – Daniel Gafford

Daniel Gafford fans, please stand up. I’m an NBA fan and I wasn’t even aware of the Dallas Mavericks big man. However, he’s on the cusp of making serious NBA history.

As any basketball fan knows, many of Wilt Chamberlain’s stats are untouchable. One that has stood for nearly 60 years was his consecutive field goals made. He made 35 straight field goals back in 1967. That’s a pretty insane feat but it looks like his record could be broken.

Daniel Gafford Nearing NBA History

Gafford isn’t a household name but he became the subject of NBA news when it was pointed out that he’s made 33 straight field goals. He’s three more baskets away from surpassing Chamberlain’s record.

The Mavericks play the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night and there’s a strong chance this will be the night he breaks the record. However, he’s got to be careful if he cares about history. It’s very easy to miss a basket and even the greatest players in NBA history have trouble making at least 50% of their field goal attempts.

From Gafford’s perspective, he doesn’t seem too concerned.

“My philosophy for sure is just being consistent,” Gafford said after a win over the Bulls on Monday. “I have the mindset that I want to finish everything, no matter if there’s somebody in front of you, or there isn’t somebody in front of you. At the end of the day, I either dunk it or lay it on the rim.”

Look, I get what he’s saying but there aren’t a lot of second-round picks who can say that they broke a record held by Wilt Chamberlain for over 50 years. This is a big freaking deal and it’d be pretty wild if he was the one to hold this record. Could you imagine looking at records 30 years from now and Daniel Gafford’s name in the record books? That’s pretty special for a player who isn’t a superstar.

Daniel Gafford Only Recently Joined the Mavs

Gafford has only been a member of the Mavericks since February and has played 14 NBA games for them. He’s clearly becoming an impact player for the team.

Gafford is still only averaging 10.6 points a game in Dallas but his efficiency is really helpful. He’s going to miss a basket at some point but until then, he deserves to be in the spotlight for a bit.
