Worth the Watch

We came to this decision as a family. – Giannis

Now that he’s such a massive star, it’s easy to forget that Giannis Antetokounmpo came from nothing. The two-time NBA MVP was born to Nigerian parents in Greece where Giannis and his brothers weren’t given much.

Fast forward years later and now he’s worth millions and Giannis’ stats are as good as ever. Despite the success, Giannis still remembers his roots and decided to share his story in a documentary titled Giannis: The Marvelous Journey on Amazon Prime. The film looks like it will cover Giannis’ life before he started dominating NBA games.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s siblings, Thanasis, Kostas and Alex Antetokounmpo are all involved in the documentary and it was important to the NBA star that the family was OK with telling their story.

“I talked to my brothers, talked to my mom and Mariah, to see if we were okay and willing to share our story with the world, and we came to this decision as a family,” Giannis told PEOPLE.

Even with the rise to fame, Giannis is still very close with his family and plays on the Bucks with his brother Thanasis. It’s certainly an inspiring story to see Antetokounmpo’s rise to prominence.

Giannis has been making NBA news for years so we’re all really familiar with him. It appears the documentary is going to give us much more insight into his past and family dynamics.

“You don’t want to go back there because there are just some things that are hard to talk about,” Giannis said. “… We don’t know how the world is going to take it. I’ve never opened up about my father to anybody. So it’s good, but it’s also hard.”

Giannis doesn’t have to put his story out there. He could easily sit back and just keep cashing checks. It’s admirable that he’d be willing to open up about his life because there could be other young athletes going through similar situations that he can help inspire.

Now, sometimes these documentaries that are produced by the famous people they are about could be underwhelming. Naturally, they don’t want to dig too deep. I thought Steph Curry’s documentary with A24 was pretty underwhelming for that exact reason. Here’s hoping that Giannis is willing to get deeper and be vulnerable.

I think it should be worth a watch if the film shows us things that fans don’t know.
