Legends Better Watch Out

Let’s watch Edwards win a title before giving him one, and then we can determine if he’s a Legend Killer…

Anthony Edwards is making all kinds of NBA news, now being called the new ‘Legend Killer’ after dispatching LeBron and Luka’s Lakers in the first round, while then polishing off Steph Curry’s Warriors in the second. But is he worthy of the title?

Orton Passes the Torch

Wrestling icon Randy Orton made a name for himself by slaying the dragons of the sport, earning the moniker ‘Legend Killer.’ Orton recently posted a graphic on X of himself passing a ‘Legend Killer’ chain to Minnesota Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards. The message was clear: Ant is the NBA’s new legend killer, and now it’s time for him to get his.

Although Orton’s greatest hits included upsets over the likes of Mick Foley, Ric Flair, The Undertaker, and Triple H, Edwards’ burgeoning resume consists of a first-round series sweep in the 2024 NBA playoffs over Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal as he doused the Suns by averaging a stellar 31 points per game.

He then followed that performance up by battling Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray in the second round of the playoffs last year when the Wolves ousted the Nuggets in seven games.

NBA rumors suggested Minnesota was poised to win it all, but that proved to be untrue as they would ultimately get eliminated by the Mavericks in the conference championship.

Back Again

This year, Minnesota fans are hoping their Timberwolves get an opportunity to rightfully proclaim themselves as the Best in the West. And if that happens, then they will have a date with the Beasts of the East to determine the 2025 world champions.

Things are starting off quite nicely for Edwards and his pack of Wolves this year, as they eliminated LeBron and Luka in five games, as Anthony Edwards’ stats showed him averaging 26.8 points per game in the first-round series.

But then it was on to face the legendary Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. Edwards did not yield in the face of greatness and instead helped his team to another five-game series victory, vaulting the Wolves into the conference finals against either the Thunder or the Nuggets.

But here’s the thing. Anthony Edwards is a talented player who is surrounded by other talented players. And yes, he’s only 23, so perhaps it’s unfair to criticize him by pointing out he’s never even been to an NBA Finals.

But to call him a ‘Legend Killer’ when his team entered the postseason as the No. 6 seed, and Steph barely played in the previous series due to a strained hamstring injury, seems a bit overwrought. We should also point out that there are four other Minnesota starters and several backups who are also killing these legends besides Edwards.

Let’s watch Edwards win a title before giving him one, and then we can determine if he’s a Legend Killer…or simply a legend in his own right.
