Avengers…Assemble 💪

He [Lyles] doesn’t think the NBA has a right to define what a world champion…

American basketball players aren’t messing around for the Paris 2024 Olympics. According to NBA news, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, and Jrue Holiday are all joining the team, as well as Anthony Davis, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton.

That’s essentially an All-NBA team in one roster. There’s also one more roster spot left but NBA rumors haven’t revealed who will get that spot.

The USA usually has enough talent to where not every superstar needs to play in the Olympics but almost every great American basketball player is on this roster. Why the motivation this year? Well, there could be a couple of reasons.

First of all, Team USA got embarrassed in the FIBA World Cup. Now, the only players on the 2024 Olympics roster who were also on the FIBA World Cup team were Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton. They were awesome in the World Cup and weren’t the reason Team USA lost.

However, it’s clear that the veterans weren’t going to rely on young players to win the gold this year.

The Noah Lyles Factor

Another reason why NBA players could be motivated to participate in the Olympics this year is due to Noah Lyles. For those who don’t remember, the track and field star took a shot at the NBA for calling the winner of the NBA Finals world champions. Lyles, who has won multiple gold medals on the world stage, doesn’t think the NBA has a right to define what a world champion is since it’s a national league.

Many players took issue with those comments, including Kevin Durant. It was a pretty dumb comment by Lyles considering all of the best international basketball players in the world play in the NBA and Team USA has won 16 of 20 possible gold medals in the history of the Summer Olympics.

Sure, from a semantics level, Lyles isn’t wrong but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a stupid distinction. Regardless, there’s clear motivation from American basketball players to become definitive world champions once again. Lyles won’t be able to say shit about that.
