Passing the Torch 👑

“They have a great guy in Brunson, I’ve known him since he was about two years old…” -Ewing

Jalen Brunson carries the Knicks’ championship hopes and dreams on his shoulders. That’s not exactly breaking NBA news Brunson makes everyone on the team better, recognizes when it’s time to step up in the fourth quarter of crucial games, and has made the mythic Madison Square Garden serenade him with choruses of “MVP, MVP, MVP” on more than one occasion.

Brunson’s inspired play hasn’t gone unnoticed by Knicks legend Patrick Ewing, who was in attendance during Saturday’s 105-93 home win against the Nets and was asked about the team’s current roster.

They have a great guy in Brunson, I’ve known him since he was about two years old but he was always in my locker, he would not leave my locker. He was always by my side”, Ewing said.

I love what he’s doing, he’s a great player, I had to coach against him for a few years at Villanova, he used to torch me I keep telling his Daddy, if I knew I was I was going to get into coaching I would have been recruiting him from then”.

Ewing played together with Jalen’s dad, Rick, for three seasons, and he coached Georgetown from 2017 to 2023. Jalen played at Villanova from 2015 to 2018, helping them win the National Championship in 2016 and 2018.

Ewing’s Iconic Career With the Knicks

The Knicks selected Ewing with the first pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. Ewing quickly became an elite center in the NBA, and he led the Knicks to the playoffs for 15 straight years, including NBA Finals appearances in 1994 and 1999. He averaged 22.8 points, 10.4 rebounds, two assists, and one block in 36.2 minutes across 1,039 games over 15 seasons with the Knicks.

A Hall of Famer and an 11-time NBA All-Star, Ewing won Olympic gold medals with the United States in 1984 and 1992 as part of the legendary Dream Team. He was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996 and one of the 75 Greatest Players in NBA History in 2021.

Ewing is beloved in New York! Many consider him the Knicks’ uncrowned king.

How Far Can the Knicks Go This Season?

While the Knicks won’t enter the playoffs as favorites to go all the way, they’re capable of winning the NBA Championship, as long as their best players are available.

Right now, three-time NBA All-Star Julius Randle, ace defender OG Anunoby, and talented center Mitchell Robinson are all still out. NBA rumors suggest they’ll be ready to go once the playoffs start, increasing the Knicks’ chances to win NBA games when it matters the most.

A deep playoff run is not possible unless these three players return and produce as usual. Jalen Brunson’s stats this season are incredible, and while the Knicks need him and Randle at their best, they also must capitalize on their deep roster once it is finally at full strength.
