Magic Johnson has known nothing but success…
It is not breaking NBA news for basketball fans that Magic Johnson has an impressive ring collection as a 5-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s. He delivered one of his most iconic performances as a rookie against the 76ers to win his first in 1980, and then he won his fifth in 1988.
“HAVE NO FEAR, MAGIC IS HERE”: On this date in 1980, 42 years ago, 21 year old rookie Magic Johnson replaced an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at center, scoring 42 PTS & leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the 1980 NBA championship over Julius Erving’s Philadelphia 76ers 🏆

But when you consider the overall scope of Johnson’s career as an athlete and team owner, his ring collection is actually insane:
- One ring as a player for the Michigan State Spartans (NCAAB)
- Five rings as a player and five rings as an owner for the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA)
- One ring as an owner for the Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA)
- One ring as an owner for the Los Angeles FC (MLS)
- Two rings as an owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB)
When you add it all together, that’s 15 rings with the latest coming last week as part of the managing entity of the Dodgers, who just won the World Series over the New York Yankees.
And Magic may not be done as the Dodgers roster is loaded with a chance to repeat, and dual-threat Shohei Ohtani will likely return to pitching soon.
Magic Johnson has quite a ring collection 💍

One of the Most Successful Athletes Ever
Magic Johnson has known nothing but success from leading the 1979 Spartans to a national championship to winning a ton of NBA games for the Lakers, who were also his break into team ownership when Jerry Buss sold him a 4% stake of the team for $10 million.
As an executive, Johnson saw the Lakers win five more championships during the Kobe Bryant era. This only encouraged Magic to get more involved in Los Angeles team sports with his group making the winning bid for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012. It was a $2 billion bid and Johnson is considered the face of the ownership group, which has only gone on to own stakes in other teams, including the Sparks and LAFC.
The LAFC only began play in 2018 but they already won the MLS Cup in 2022, and they have the second-best odds (+400 at BetUS) to win it this year.
Magic Johnson is now a champion in THREE different leagues:
• 5x NBA Champion as a Laker
• WNBA Champion as Sparks owner
• World Series Champion as Dodgers owner pic.twitter.com/cqYQ5DD1KM— SB Nation (@SBNation) October 28, 2020
Are the Commanders Next?
Perhaps Johnson’s boldest venture is in the NFL with the Washington Commanders. He invested $240 million in a group led by Josh Harris that purchased the Commanders from embattled owner Dan Snyder in 2023. The total sale was $6.05 billion, the most ever for a sports franchise.
Johnson has called this purchase the greatest achievement of his business career. In just his second season as a team owner, the Commanders are making NFL news weekly with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels having a stellar year in leading the team to a 7-2 record. They have the fewest turnovers (three) through nine games in a season in NFL history, and they have arguably the most thrilling win of the season with Daniels’ Hail Mary to Noah Brown against the Bears in Week 8.

With Daniels looking like the next elite young quarterback, don’t be shocked if the Commanders are in the Super Bowl soon enough. They may only be +2000 to win the Super Bowl this season, but Magic could soon be holding his first Lombardi Trophy.
Another ring for the collection.
