Don’t Let It Go to Your Head, Steph

“It’s me and Magic? Is that the conversation?”

Steph Curry’s GOAT resume gets better and better every season. We’ve all seen the NBA news about him, the four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP is without question one of the best players ever. However, there’s still debate on whether he is in the all-time rankings.

While many would still say Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson is the greatest point guard ever, Curry thinks he’s already passed him up.

“It’s me and Magic?” Curry asked Arenas on the Gil’s Arena podcast. “Is that the conversation?”

Curry then went on to definitively say that he’s the greatest point guard ever but acknowledged that he has to say that.

Uh, why does he have to say that? Curry is an all-time great and will be in the Hall of Fame one day. Plus, he’s still playing so there’s a chance he keeps improving his resume. However, it’s hard to say he’s a better point guard than Magic Johnson.

When I think point guard, I think of a player who can not only score at a high rate but also get a lot of assists. Magic is seventh all-time with 10,141 assists while Curry is 45th with 5,740. He only has five more assists than Wall.

Now, Curry is going to finish with many more career points than Magic but he’s already played more seasons than the Lakers legend. If it weren’t for Magic having to call it a career early, his numbers would be even more impressive.

There’s also the fact that Magic has five championships, which is more than Curry. Magic is a three-time NBA Finals MVP while Curry has only won one. These are not just NBA rumors, Curry is without question the greatest shooter of all time and certainly a greater scorer than Magic. However, saying he’s a better all-time point guard diminishes what is asked of the position.

Curry is feeling himself right now. He just had a fancy new documentary come out with A24 and is only a year removed from winning his first NBA Finals MVP. He may have come into the NBA as an underdog but he’s got a massive ego now. That said, he did acknowledge that Magic’s resume is unbelievable.

“But I really feel like, to your point, Magic’s resume is ridiculous,” Curry added. “So the fact that we’re even having that conversation that’s a place I never thought I’d be in.”

If Curry can add another ring before he retires, his case for greatest point guard of all time definitely becomes stronger. He’ll never be able to win five rings as quickly as Magic was able to so maybe it’ll take him adding a sixth to be definitively considered the best ever. If he finishes his career with just four rings, it’s hard to imagine he’ll widely be considered better than Magic when it’s all said and done.
