Simply Not Human 👽
I want the rest of our performances, the rest of our games, to overshadow this one. – Wemby
Victor Wembanyama made NBA news when he stole both the spotlight and the headlines with a dazzling performance on Wednesday night against the Wizards, becoming the youngest center to score 50 points!
Wemby’s a Unicorn
The No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NBA Draft is blossoming before our very eyes. San Antonio’s 20-year-old center was nothing short of dominant in the Spurs’ 139-130 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night. Victor Wembanyama’s stats line revealed he played only 32 minutes yet ended with 50 points, 6 boards, 3 blocks, and a pair of assists in the victory.

At age 20, he also became the youngest center ever to reach the half-century mark, besting Shaquille O’Neal by 314 days, and is now the fourth youngest player in history to score 50 behind only Brandon Jennings, LeBron James, and Devin Booker.
Wemby’s progress over his 83 NBA games in the league has been evident from his rookie season in 2023. But now he has that signature highlight reel game where the 7’3” phenom showed he is both a monster in the paint and an assassin from outside the arc, as evidenced by his eight three-pointers. Unstoppable.

The NBA odds on the matchup had the hometown Spurs favored by 10 points, but despite failing to cover the number, the fans were treated to a slice of NBA history. Wembanyama has been pedestrian at best from three-point land this season, shooting 33.7%, but last night he drained half of his shots from downtown.
Generational Talent
When interviewed after the game, Wemby said, “My first thought is eventually I want the rest of our performances, the rest of our games, to overshadow this one. I want to make it where in the future, [this is] just another one.”
Reacting to his place among the legends of the game with his historic performance, he stated, “I love to celebrate the small wins and the big wins for a certain amount of time. But tomorrow, we’re already locked in on the Lakers. I’m going to give myself a little bit of time to reflect. It’s definitely a big milestone. It’s kind of a private club. It’s certainly something I’m proud about.”

The mere fact that a man of his size is even a threat from the outside is testament to his jaw-dropping ability. He is slowly morphing into the decades-long line of generational big men the Spurs have enjoyed since David ‘The Admiral’ Robinson broke into the league in 1989 and was subsequently joined by another future Hall of Famer in Tim Duncan four years later.
Between Robinson and Duncan, the pair boast 25 All-Star selections, seven NBA championships, and three MVP Awards. Duncan retired in 2016, and the Spurs have desperately searched for another formidable center ever since. Clearly, they’ve found one.
