If Miami wins the title this year, they’ll be joining the club
NBA history is replete with great teams, champions, and dynasties. However, it’s possible that not all championships are created equal. The 2015–16 Golden State Warriors team won 73 games in the regular season but lost in the NBA Finals whereas the 1977-78 Washington Bullets only won 44 games and won a championship.

That’s where we’re going to start our list. The 1977-78 Washington Bullets had the worst regular season record of any team to win an NBA championship. Their 44-38 record led to a winning percentage of 53.7%. There’s no such thing as a bad championship but the Bullets (now Wizards) own the distinction of having the worst.
The topic of the worst teams to ever win a championship is making the rounds in NBA news thanks to the Miami Heat. They could give the Bullets a run for the worst team to win a championship. Veteran radio host Craig Carton recently turned heads when he made a definitive statement about this current Heat team. “This Miami Heat team would be the worst team to ever win an NBA title,” Carton recently said.

The Heat’s regular season record of 44-38 was identical to the 1977-78 Bullets’. Where Miami has the edge is that they came into the playoffs the eighth seed while Washington was the three seed during their run. The Heat also lost their first play-in game and only have one star player. Jimmy Butler is the only player in Miami likely to make the Hall of Fame while the Bullets had two in Bob Dandridge and Elvin Hayes. If the Heat are able to pull off the upset, it’s hard to argue against the idea that they are the worst team to ever bring home a ring.

There are also plenty of lackluster teams to win championships. Since the NBA expanded to an 82-game season, the 1994-95 Houston Rockets, 1974-75 Golden State Warriors, 1968-69 Boston Celtics, and the 1976-77 Portland Trail Blazers all won less than 60% of their regular season games before winning championships.
There have also been many bad teams to win championships in recent years. If you’re one to bet on basketball games, you will most likely remember the 2018-19 finals well. The Toronto Raptors almost certainly wouldn’t have won a championship against the Golden State Warriors if Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson didn’t get injured.

Luckily, there’s no such thing as a bad championship. And despite what NBA rumors say, the Heat do have a chance at winning. It’s arguably more impressive to have a bad regular season just to turn it around in the playoffs. Miami isn’t going to have a problem holding the title of the worst team to win a championship in NBA history as long as they all get their rings in the end.
