Purdue’s Big Man Is Stellar!

The big man is averaging video game numbers this season…

For years, NBA rumors have swirled about just how viable Purdue star center Zach Edey will be at the next level. Just one year ago, there was a debate as to whether Edey would even get drafted.

Despite being the best player in NCAA men’s basketball, Edey was widely projected to be a second-round pick. Edey returned to Purdue and has worked his way into being a likely lottery pick.

Edey’s NBA draft stock is soaring, a reality that is here to stay if Purdue makes a deep NCAAB tournament run. ESPN’s latest mock draft has Edey being selected by the Pelicans with the No. 14 pick.

Edey is a walking double-double, so why is there so much debate on the big man’s NBA outlook?

Zach Edey Is Putting Up Video Game Numbers in March Madness

The main reason is the modern NBA big man is a player who can shoot from outside and handle the ball. Edey is an old-school center who does his best offensive work with his back to the basket.

Yet, it is hard to argue with Zach Edey’s stats, particularly to start March Madness. All Edey did to start off the NCAA tournament was drop 30 points, 21 rebounds, and 3 blocks against Grambling State.

Edey followed it up with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks against Utah State. Things will get much harder for Purdue as they take on Gonzaga in the Sweet 16. Edey has already had success vs. the Zags posting 25 points, 14 boards, and 3 blocks in their November matchup.

The big man is averaging video game numbers this season with 24.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game this season.

Edey Is Now Projected to Be a Lottery Pick in the 2024 NBA Draft

If you are picking in the middle of the first round of the draft, the odds are already stacked against you that the team finds a player who ends up being a contributor in NBA games. Why not roll the dice on Edey who at the very least gives you defense, offensive firepower, and the ability to create open three-point opportunities for the team’s guards?

It’s March Madness which means you are going to hear a lot of narratives about how Edey’s game does not translate to the NBA. Just watch the games and imagine thinking Edey cannot at the very least be a rotational player.

Edey’s upside gives him the potential to be a legitimate NBA starter. ESPN made NBA news by moving Edey all the way up to No. 8 in their 2024 NBA draft rankings.

“While still an acquired taste for some – his defensive concerns as a slower-footed big are legitimate – he’s established himself as a lottery candidate at this point and has little left to prove,” ESPN’s Jeremy Woo wrote. “Anchoring a deep March run and helping shake the stigma around his team in the tournament would be the cherry on top.”
