That’s One Way to Crash a Celebration…

This could have been a scene right out of Austin Powers…

Maybe being born on third base isn’t so bad after all. Ohio State coach Ryan Day may still struggle to beat Michigan, but he can add 2025 National Championship to his resume after his Buckeyes came through with a 34-23 win over Notre Dame in Monday night’s title game.

The win came fairly easy, but Day and quarterback Will Howard had the bumpiest ride of the night when they tried to leave in a golf cart that some poor woman drove right into the wall with Day next to her feeling the contact.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? This could have been a scene right out of Austin Powers (1997) with Mike Myers continuously hitting the wall in a tunnel. But should we be adding one more sack to Will Howard’s stats for the night? He was close to flawless in the game.

But Day soon exited the vehicle and went walking along with some eager CFB fans cheering on the victory some thought would never come for him.

That Was… Something

It’s kind of a fitting way for the first-ever 12-team playoff tournament to end with the No. 8 Buckeyes beating the No. 7 Fighting Irish, two schools that have suffered a lot of heartbreak and crushing losses on their way to trying to win another championship for their historic schools. Notre Dame football and Ohio State football have been waiting years for this but favored Ohio State was victorious.

The big college football news this year was the addition of a 12-team tournament, and you can say it produced some decent moments and games. But there will be concerns going forward that the teams with a bye could be at a disadvantage with too much time off, and it feels a bit absurd that these teams played for the championship despite neither even playing a conference championship game.

Notre Dame doesn’t have a conference, but the Buckeyes never would have sniffed a national championship game in the old format with their two losses on the season. They are fortunate things worked out the way they did.

Do We Like This New Tournament Idea?

That’s Year 1 in the books for the CFB tournament. I guess we’ll just have to get used to it.

Personally, I liked the way the regular season used to be extremely important in college football and that one bad loss could easily end a team’s hopes at the title.

I also didn’t mind the BCS system that would often get the two best schools in the championship game to decide a winner. The 2006 Rose Bowl between Texas and USC is my all-time favorite college football memory and one of the best football games I’ve ever experienced, period.

It doesn’t feel like you can recreate that magic anymore in the new system and with the transfer portal and NIL taking over things.

Ohio State’s win will vindicate Day as a coach for some, but the money aspect in modern college football didn’t go unnoticed by many on the night on social media:

Hell, even the Fighting Irish are taking home $20 million for their run to the big game.

I guess Monday was truly a day where the rich got richer.
