Untouchable Numbers

Both Hunter and Sanders will be top picks in this month’s NFL Draft…

Colorado’s dynamic duo of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders have stolen their fair share of college football news, but the most recent word out of Boulder is that both of these superstars will see their jerseys retired at the annual Spring Game as part of Black & Gold Day on Saturday and broadcast on ESPN 2.

Honor Ceremony

It’s hard to think of two more deserving players who made a greater impact on a college football program than Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders during their tenure at Colorado. The list of awards and accomplishments is lengthy, to say the least.

Travis Hunter is the rarest of breeds, a generational two-way player whose skill set and on-field prowess have been compared to his head coach, Deion Sanders, a 6x All-Pro and 2x Super Bowl champion with the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys. The cornerback/wide receiver hybrid won the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award, and both the AP and Sporting News Player of the Year awards.

Moreover, Hunter won the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player) in back-to-back seasons while winning the Bednarik Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy as the national defensive player of the year. Hunter was also named the Biletnikoff Award winner as the best receiver regardless of position.

Lastly, the 21-year-old junior made college football history by being named the first player in the history of the Walter Camp All-America team to earn two first-team honors and is the first player to earn two first-team and three overall honors on the AP team.

Shedeur Sanders’ list of awards may not be as extensive as Hunter’s, but no quarterback ever put up bigger numbers at Colorado. Sanders won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation’s top upperclassman quarterback in college football in 2024 and was the unanimous choice for the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

Between his two years at Jackson State and his two seasons at Colorado, Shedeur Sanders’ stats are unparalleled, completing 1,267 of 1,808 (70.1%) passes for 14,353 yards with 134 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He also set an NCAA Division I record of 49 consecutive games and became only one of two Division I quarterbacks to throw for 14,000 yards and complete 70% of his career passes.

NFL Beckons

Both Hunter and Sanders will be top picks in this month’s NFL Draft, but where they land and with what teams has become a giddy topic among draft geeks. NFL rumors persist that Miami’s Cam Ward is destined to be the No. 1 overall selection of the Tennessee Titans.

After that, it’s sheer speculation, as some NFL pundits have Sanders going next to the Cleveland Browns. However, others insist his reputation as a diva in spurning the drills at the Combine and his intention to skip the Draft have diminished his standing as the leader of a franchise.

The NFL Draft order shows several quarterback-needy teams at the top, with not only Tennessee and Cleveland at numbers 1 and 2, respectively, but also the Giants at No. 3 as well as the Raiders (6) and Jets (7). It would be hard to fathom Sanders escaping the first 10 picks of the draft.

As for Travis Hunter, any team could use a stellar two-way player, but is he a better defensive back or wide receiver? In the NFL, two-way starters are like unicorns, and it’s a tall order for any player to be at their best playing on both sides of the ball. Sources say the New England Patriots would snap Hunter up at No. 4, but it is increasingly likely that he will be gone by then.
