Jets Nightmare Continues

I just need a break mentally to refresh & put my feet in the sand & then see where I’m at… – Aaron Rodgers

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers made NFL news recently when he cryptically suggested he needed a mental break from the game to refresh his perspective in the offseason. NFL predictions say Rodgers will be anywhere but in New York next year.

Gimme a Break

Aaron Rodgers’ sad saga in New York continued with the celebrated quarterback bemoaning his plight and suggesting it’s time he steps back to take a break from what has been a disastrous season for a team that was predicted to make a Super Bowl run. If your preseason NFL picks included the Jets even sniffing the playoffs, your bankroll has my sympathies.

Aaron Rodgers’ career stats reveal he staggered through the worst season of his career, throwing the fewest touchdowns (24) and garnering his lowest passer rating (89.1) over 16 NFL games. Certainly, it hasn’t all been Rodgers’ fault, as there is plenty of blame to go around, but much was expected of the aging future Hall of Famer, yet little of that promise was fulfilled.

The Jets enter Week 18 with a 4-12 record, and last week Rodgers took himself out of the game early in the fourth quarter when his team was trailing 33-0 to the Bills, advising the coaches to bring in his backup, Tyrod Taylor.

“I mean it was 33-0, we were sitting there, and I said at some point, we should probably go to Tyrod [Taylor] here, huh? Then the next play [the Bills] threw a screen for a touchdown. So, it was 40-0,” said Rodgers.

This did not endear him to the fans or some members of the media, like former Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who stated, “He decided to take his ball and go home because he wasn’t getting his way.”

Rodgers Wants It His Way

Rodgers has always been a polarizing figure. He’s a high-IQ guy who believes he’s always the smartest guy in the room and isn’t shy about letting everyone know it. He waxes prosaic on a wide range of topics, and the common denominator is Aaron’s never wrong, at least according to Aaron.

That annoying personality trait has grated on many people over the years, but he’s been a bit of a Teflon know-it-all because of his gridiron heroics. As long as he kept producing on the field, coaches and teammates were obliged to humor him even if some didn’t like him. That has suddenly changed as he is 25th in the NFL in QBR.

Rodgers got the bag, got hurt, came back, and failed. A third year as a member of the New York Jets roster is highly unlikely, and it doesn’t appear as though he’s shedding any tears about the possibility of being released. Although he did acknowledge some highlights with the team, he understands changes will be made; from the front office to the team’s personnel on the field, and he’s likely a casualty of yet another rebuild in New York.

“I need a break mentally. I don’t want to make a decision until I’ve been able to rest, mentally & physically, cause it feels like I’ve been rehabbing since Sept 11 last year & training just to be able to play. I’ve been banged up this season & haven’t felt really good until the last 3 or 4 weeks. I just need a break mentally to refresh & put my feet in the sand & then see where I’m at after that. March is free agency, I don’t think it will even get that far just cause there’s gonna be a regime change here & whatever they end up doing I’ll either get a call or have a conversation & go from there.”

Rodgers will either retire or give it another go next season with a different team. But if he decides on the latter, will he have any takers willing to roll the dice on a 41-year-old who appears to be at the end of the line?
