The Giants Are Still a Dumpster Fire and Mayfield Was Right There to Remind Them

A Giant Mess

Same outcome when we had DJ [Daniel Jones] at quarterback… – Malik Nabers

The New York Jets have been such an epic failure this season under Aaron Rodgers that they steal all the NFL news headlines from the team they share a building with. But let’s not forget the New York Giants are their own brand of dumpster fire.

Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield trolled them with a fun touchdown celebration when he threw up the Tommy DeVito hand gesture after he scored on a run.

As Silvio would say on The Sopranos, that’s anti-Italian discrimination! But Mayfield insists he wasn’t disrespecting DeVito, who he met in Vegas at last year’s Super Bowl. He was giving him a little tribute and that the kid has a lot of “swag” according to Baker, who dominated in the 30-7 win over DeVito’s Giants.

What a way to start the post-Daniel Jones era after the Giants (2-9) released the embattled quarterback earlier this week. But the only thing close to a star on the offense says it’s not about the quarterback as Sunday showed.

Malik Nabers Says It’s Not the Quarterback

Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers set an NFL record with his 67th catch, the most ever through nine games of a career. But he didn’t have a single target in the first half on Sunday, and he doesn’t understand why that happened. He told reporters to ask coach Brian Daboll about it.

In perhaps a more telling video, Nabers says it’s not the quarterback. “Same outcome when we had DJ [Daniel Jones] at quarterback,” Nabers said.

Nabers is right. We heard about the offensive brilliance of Daboll when he came over from Buffalo, but his big solution to improve Jones in 2022 was to limit his involvement in the offense and bank on some close wins when the team started 6-1. But since that start, the Giants are 12-27-1 in NFL games under Daboll, who also hasn’t gotten good results from his defenses.

Nabers was supposed to be like adding Stefon Diggs to this offense for Jones, but the results are nothing short of putrid for a 2-9 team with no quarterback of the future on the roster.

They may as well be looking for their next coach for 2025 too.

Salt in the Wound: Saquon Barkley Rushes for 255 Yards

If Sunday wasn’t bad enough for the Giants and their fans, they had to watch former running back Saquon Barkley rush for 255 yards to help the Eagles beat the Rams on Sunday Night Football.

Saquon Barkley’s stats included two touchdown runs of 70-plus yards last night. He had one such touchdown run in his six seasons with the Giants. We don’t need to start NFL rumors that he’d be dominating like this if the Giants just gave him a new contract. They don’t have the offensive line to open holes like this, which is why he’s thriving for the Eagles.

But thanks to HBO’s offseason version of Hard Knocks, we heard the internal discussion on Saquon as one brave soul said he’d have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philly. That’s why the Giants should be firing some people in the front office for this disastrous season when it’s all said and done.
