Gronk is always keeping himself busy since retiring…

With Monday being Veteran’s Day, the NFL news from Sunday’s FOX crew was honoring military members with a special show at a San Diego naval base. Retired future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski stole the show when he did a live stunt by jumping out of a helicopter into the ocean.

An Honor in True Gronk Style

In typical Gronk fashion, he spiked a football after he was done with the stunt. This certainly beats his USAA commercials in recent years where the running joke is basically Gronk committing stolen valor, which frankly never made sense.

Gronk also went through the obstacle course, looking about as athletic as you’d expect from a tall legend who scored 93 touchdowns in NFL games in the regular season and 15 more in the playoffs. He certainly got through it better than some characters in the movie Full Metal Jacket:

Many still consider Gronk the greatest tight end in NFL history. He is 5 months older than Travis Kelce, who is still playing with a three-peat in mind that would likely give him the nod from a lot of fans. But at their peaks, Gronk was the more dangerous player.

Gronk is always keeping himself busy since retiring from the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His last game was in the 2021 season, so he should be a first-ballot Hall of Famer in the 2027 class.

Gronk’s Post-NFL Career

Doing commercials and stunts has become common for Gronk in his post-playing career. He first joined FOX when he retired for the first time in 2019. That led to his infamous appearance on a New Year’s Eve show with Steve Harvey where he destroyed a replica of Harvey’s head to bring in 2020:

Gronk hosted WrestleMania 36 a few months later in 2020 and appeared on The Masked Singer before returning to the field with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. But since retiring for good in 2022, he’s been back at it with the FOX crew, having fun and being unquestionably Gronk even as he gets closer to 40.

Gronk has also moved into some light acting work. He played a helicopter gunner in the 2021 action movie Boss Level. He’s also played himself in 80 for Brady, Good Burger 2, and The Instigators with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.

But not everyone is enamored with Gronk’s work with the FOX crew. Perhaps in his most notable appearance since retiring, Gronk was a featured guest on Netflix’s The Roast of Tom Brady in May 2024. Nothing was off limits at the roast, including jokes about deceased teammate Aaron Hernandez who Gronk came into the league with in 2010.

One of the funniest moments was when former coach Bill Belichick took the mic and directly mentioned Gronk by updating his mantra “Do your job” to “please, stop doing your job” to poke fun at the tight end’s lack of strong analysis on TV.

No doubt Gronk is a character, but in October, fans couldn’t stop laughing at the actor playing him in FX’s American Sports Story, the series about Aaron Hernandez’s murder case. The Gronk character was mostly limited to one scene, but it was an instant classic:

Hear that laugh? That’s Gronk to a tee.
