Franchise QBs 💪

I would be more likely to target Washington star Micahel Penix Jr. over taking McCarthy in the teens.

The latest NFL mock drafts had a wide range of outcomes for the top quarterbacks. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels all appear to be locks to go inside the top 10, with the potential to be the first three picks in the draft.

After this top group of signal-callers, the quarterbacks remain more of a mystery. How many quarterbacks will be selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft? I’m going to predict five quarterbacks go on the first night of the draft.

Here is how we get there.

Caleb Williams, Drake Maye & Jayden Daniels

There appears to be a clear class of quarterbacks developing based on the latest chatter in NFL rumors. Williams is all but a lock to have No. 1 pick painted on his freshly manicured nails.

For the top three quarterbacks, the biggest question is who will be the second quarterback selected between Maye and Daniels. Smart money is on the Bears, Commanders, and Patriots all taking quarterbacks with the first three picks in the NFL Draft order.

J.J. McCarthy Appears to Be in His Own Tier

Fresh off the national championship run, Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is the favorite to be the fourth quarterback taken in the draft. McCarthy is widely projected to be in the No. 10-20 range.

McCarthy is sure to be linked to the Seahawks after the team hired former Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. I am not sold on McCarthy as an NFL quarterback. The signal-caller remains more of an unknown thanks to a Michigan offense that appeared allergic to throwing the football.

Was this strategy a result of McCarthy’s deficiencies or simply Jim Harbaugh’s love affair with running the ball? I guess time will tell.

Here’s a look at some NFL Draft Odds to consider!

Michael Penix Jr. Is a Sleeper to Watch in the 2024 NFL Draft

If I were an NFL general manager, I would be more likely to target Washington star Micahel Penix Jr. over taking McCarthy in the teens. The one caveat to this is Penix’s medicals which we should have a better idea about after the NFL Combine.

The quarterback has had multiple surgeries to repair serious leg injuries in recent years. That said, Penix has a cannon for an arm and is deadly accurate. Most importantly, Washington turned into a contender after Penix transferred to the Pacific Northwest from Indiana.

Can a Fifth Quarterback Be Selected in the 2024 NFL Draft?

The biggest thing to watch in the NFL news is whether a fifth quarterback can sneak into the first round. While he may not be my cup of tea, McCarthy appears to be a pretty safe bet to hear his name called on the first night of the draft.

The bigger question is whether Penix, Bo Nix, or another quarterback will be selected at the end of the first round. Some draft analysts have Penix not being selected until the third round.

The Rams and Steelers are among the teams who could pick a quarterback at the end of the first round. Also, don’t discount the idea of a team jumping back into the first round to select a quarterback.

We have a long time until NFL games are back on our TVs, meaning the draft picture could also change in the coming weeks. Keep in mind that the 2025 class of quarterbacks is not projected to be particularly strong. This could put pressure on teams to take a QB sooner rather than later in 2024.
