The Jim Harbaugh Era Begins

Things [in LA] could get worse before they get better…

The NFL news brought us the rare offseason where both Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick were prized free agents during the coaching carousel. And then there was one.

Harbaugh is now officially married to the LA Chargers, leaving Belichick looking around like that Fresh Prince meme.

But that’s for another day as the Chargers’ social team is crushing it with Harbaugh content. It is unclear who the Chargers were competing with as the Raiders ended up hiring Antonio Pierce.

Part of me wonders how big of a market Harbaugh and Belichick found as neither seems like the best hang.

Is Jim Harbaugh a Good Hang?

After months of NFL rumors, Harbaugh finally is back in the league. Look, a general manager does not want to hire a coach who is going to make his life completely miserable. Take Seahawks general manager John Schneider for example.

Do you think he wants to go from spending his days with Pete Carroll to whole-milk-drinking Harbaugh? Here’s how former Stanford coach David Shaw explained hangin’ with Harbaugh.

“He’s going to rub some people the wrong way,” Shaw said during a 2015 interview on The Rich Eisen Show, via M Live. “He’s going to find a way to win football games because that’s what he does. Some people are going to wear out (being around him).

“Jim admits that himself. He has a tendency to wear people out at times. You get the good with the bad and what you get from Jim is 100 miles an hour from day one.”

How Soon Can Harbaugh Win in Los Angeles?

Weird convos aside, how does Harbaugh fit with the Chargers? The other LA team is an annual media darling as the “sleeper” franchise in the AFC West. The Chargers also annually underperform.

There are reasons to think the new Chargers coach can turn things around sooner rather than later. The good news is Harbaugh has star quarterback Justin Herbert to build around. Joey Bosa is an elite pass rusher on the other side of the ball.

It also doesn’t hurt that you can get in your feels as Harbaugh is a former Chargers quarterback.

Things could get worse before they get better. The Chargers have four veterans topping $30 million cap hits. Despite this pile of cash, it led to a total of five wins in 2023.

Who’s got it better than us?

Sounds like the Chargers.
