NFL Honors 🏆

Fans like to let the postseason influence their decision and who reached the Super Bowl…

In this week’s NFL news, the finalists for the 2024 NFL awards were announced. The winners will be unveiled at NFL Honors on February 6. With the AP’s ranked voting system, that means these are the top five vote-getters in each category.

Keep in mind these are all regular season awards. Fans like to let the postseason influence their decision and who reached the Super Bowl, but the votes were cast before the wild card round.

Let’s pick some winners and see who was snubbed.

Most Valuable Player

The NFL MVP is likely going to Lamar Jackson for the third time. He had the best case after a record-breaking season with over 4,000 passing yards, 900 rushing yards, and 41 touchdowns against 4 interceptions.

The playoffs didn’t go Jackson’s way again, but 25 of the last 26 players to win MVP didn’t win a Super Bowl. Only Patrick Mahomes (2022) did.

But I find it very curious that Joe Burrow is going to be a finalist when his team failed to even make the playoffs, which should be disqualifying for MVP.

Offensive Rookie of the Year

It’s been a foregone conclusion that Jayden Daniels is going to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. But he was snubbed in the MVP voting after leading his team in rushing, leading them to four game-winning drives and the first 12-win season in Washington since 1991.

Daniels has also been the best quarterback this postseason and has a shot to become the first rookie to start a Super Bowl if he wins as an underdog in Philadelphia this week.

Look for Daniels to be a hot betting favorite for MVP in the 2025 season.

Coach of the Year

There were so many good candidates for Coach of the Year that Sean McDermott (Bills) and Jim Harbaugh (Chargers) didn’t even crack the top five.

Based on other award services, it looks like Kevin O’Connell (Vikings) is likely going to win this award. But my view is that his last game in Detroit was so bad that it should have given Dan Campbell the nod by finishing 15-2 to win that really tough division despite all the losses on defense to injury.

Of course, you can’t even say the playoffs are a good tiebreaker since the entire NFC North went 0-3 in January. Still hard to believe.

The Other Awards

Let’s quickly run down some of the other awards.

Defensive Player of the Year

It was a weak race with injuries to stars like Micah Parsons and Aidan Hutchinson, and the sack leader (Trey Hendrickson) played on a bad Cincinnati defense.

T.J. Watt’s Steelers also faded down the stretch, so I’d expect Patrick Surtain II of the Broncos to win after a good year in coverage. But under normal circumstances, his season wouldn’t win DPOY.

Offensive Player of the Year

Saquon Barkley’s consistency in rushing for over 2,000 yards wins him this award.

Comeback Player of the Year

Joe Burrow is probably going to win after posting big stats following his wrist injury. But if we’re going to nominate Damar Hamlin again, why not let him win since he actually played well this year? The argument against him in 2023 is that he almost never played.
