Speed Dating (NFL’s Version)

Teams will fall in love with a player because he looks good in tights…

Do NFL combine results matter? A question as old as time, and by that I mean since 1982 when it started.

What we know as today’s combine really started about two decades ago when NFL Network began broadcasting the events. In theory, watching guys in spandex run short distances is not the most exciting thing in the world.

Teams can tend to overemphasize some of the player measurements and results. Just as it is unfair to say the NFL combine is everything, it would be an overstatement to say it does not matter at all.

While area scouts have met the majority of these players, the NFL Combine is often the first time coaches and even general managers get to meet the prospects. Imagine giving a multi-year deal worth millions of dollars to someone you’ve never met.

Teams Speed Date the Draft Prospects at the NFL Combine

Behind closed doors, every NFL team hosts many of the potential draft picks for the league’s version of job interviews. That said, this year will be no different when teams will fall in love with a player because he looks good in tights.

Who hasn’t been there, amirite?

Anyways, consider some of these names: John Ross, Kalon Barnes, Dri Archer, Jerome Mathis, and Rondel Menendez. Chances are you have forgotten most, if not all, of these players.

Yet, these homes are in the record books as the players with the top-10 fastest 40-yard dash times during the NFL Combine. After the interwebs saw they were blazing fast, the NFL rumors buzzed about these potential Pro Bowlers who would not turn out to be Pro Bowlers.

Given the choice of a player who has a strong combine or one who struggles in Indy but has strong production, I’m taking the latter. Give me the one who may not be a combined warrior but has produced on the football field.

So, When Is the NFL Combine?

The exact NFL combine schedule is a bit complicated. NFL GMs and coaches typically speak to the media early in the week. This likely will take place on Feb. 27-28.

The actual on-field workouts begin on Thursday, Feb. 29 (shoutout to Leap Year). The workout you may (or may not) want to watch? Most fans will be focused on Saturday, March 2 when the quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers work out.

I don’t know, it’s good to have on in the background during your weekend brunch.

There’s a good chance the NFL news will make a guy seem like he’s the next Tom Brady after the combine. Who by the way had a terrible NFL combine, but I digress.

Chances are he’ll be a guy you’ve already forgotten about this time next year.
