Everyone Wants a Piece of the WNBA Pie!
Also, Clark is a Chiefs fan, so imagine if Mahomes tried to court her to his team.
Sports ownership has become all the rage for superstar athletes these days. We know Tom Brady recently made NFL news when he was approved as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, and LeBron James is part of a group that has a piece of the Boston Red Sox.
Patrick Mahomes, the NFL’s best player, wants in next. Mahomes and wife Brittany are interested in a piece of the WNBA pie that has been buzzing since players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese entered in the 2024 draft. The WNBA has been around since 1997, but it just had record-setting attendance, TV ratings, and overall interest has never been higher.

More WNBA revenue will soon follow, and a superstar like Mahomes wants to make sure he’s getting an early start on this potentially booming league. Even Brady already has an ownership stake in the Las Vegas Aces, who have reigning MVP A’ja Wilson.
But the Chiefs QB, who signed a historic $450 million contract in 2020, is reportedly interested in bringing an expansion WNBA team to Kansas City. Patrick and Brittany already own stakes in the Kansas City Royals, Sporting KC, and KC Current. The couple met with the WNBA to discuss their expansion plans.

Mahomes Is All Business
Winning NFL games is very profitable. Not only is Patrick Mahomes’ net worth north of $100 million before he turns 30, but his success on the field has been very lucrative to his team too.
In 2019, the Kansas City Chiefs were reportedly worth $2.3 billion. Three Super Bowl wins later, and Forbes estimated in August 2024 that the Chiefs are worth $4.85 billion, more than doubling in five years.
Mahomes and the Chiefs are in high demand, and he is raising the value of his franchise. The hope is this will help the team stay in Kansas City (Missouri) and get a renovated stadium. There has been talk of the team moving over a state to Kansas, but for now, they are still very much the Kansas City Chiefs.
But it is cool to see Mahomes wanting to pay it back by bringing a WNBA franchise to Kansas City. He sees the potential for growth there thanks in large part to his own success in making this team the NFL’s newest dynasty.
The WNBA Expansion Plan
The WNBA is about to welcome its 13th franchise for the 2025 season when the Golden State Valkyries start playing WNBA games. But you usually want an even number of teams, so there’s a great argument for adding more teams in the near future.
Adding a team in Kansas City with backing from the Mahomes family would make a lot of sense for the WNBA. Hey, maybe Peyton Manning can throw some money behind Clark’s Indiana Fever, Michael Jordan can back Reese’s Chicago Sky, and they can compete with Brady’s Aces and Mahomes’ KC squad for WNBA superiority and bragging rights.

Notice I had to pick a basketball legend for Chicago since the Bears never have a franchise quarterback. Also, Clark is a Chiefs fan, so imagine if Mahomes tried to court her to his team.
But these guys are not just sports legends. They’re all savvy businessmen too, and the WNBA is clearly on the rise.
