The Most Wonderful Time 🎄

Give me the NFL on Sunday, Wednesday, or during Armageddon…

Despite its previous stance that no NFL games would be played on non-traditional Tuesdays and Wednesdays, commissioner Roger Goodell has reversed course and games will be played on Wednesday, December 25th, 2024.

Tell Me Lies, Tell Me Sweet Little Lies

As you may know, the NFL is ubiquitous when in season, no longer content to stack all of its games on Sundays but spreading the love by bringing us violence on Monday, Thursday, and even Saturday. The three days of the week that have historically been devoid of NFL football are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Therefore, it wasn’t really considered NFL news when NFL executive V.P. of media distribution Hans Schroeder told the Wall Street Journal last year that the league would not schedule any games on Christmas in 2024 because it fell on a Wednesday.

Schroeder’s exact words were, “no games when Christmas lands on Tuesday or Wednesday.” That poor sap probably believed Rog the Dodge when he trotted him out to the press to essentially tell the world that some things in life are so sacrosanct that even the NFL won’t breach those sacred covenants. Of course, he was talking about playing on Wednesdays, not Christmas.

Well, fast forward a few months later and NFL rumors began circulating that there would, in fact, be NFL football on Wednesday, December 25th of this year. Those rumors proved to be true and some are now clutching their pearls and gasping at the hypocrisy of it all! How dare they?!

Not His First

Those same people should recall it was only a few years ago when Roger Goodell’s crusade against the evils of sports betting. Its propensity to “violate the integrity of the game” melted like butter in a blast furnace after PASPA was repealed in 2018, paving the way for licensed mobile sports betting in the States.

Roger immediately said, “Show me the money!” And sure enough, all the newly minted U.S. books were falling all over themselves to throw money at the league for an opportunity to partner with the NFL and its franchises. They say it takes a lot of skill to be a hypocrite, but even more skill to do it with a straight face.

Consider Roger Goodell skilled, a master even, only this time he had one of his lackeys make the Christmas Wednesday announcement. Schroeder had no idea he was likely telling a lie which meant his face was naturally straight whereas Roger might have looked away, touched his nose, or displayed any number of obvious “tells” that people exhibit when lying their asses off.

Personally, I’m thrilled. Give me the NFL on Sunday, Wednesday, or during Armageddon. I’ll watch. NFL Santa will visit all of us on Christmas Wednesday this year and I’m just wondering why they had to lie about it in the first place.
