The Zach Wilson: A Case Study

Who's At Fault For The Jets Sinking Ship?

Jets Season Depends on Zach Wilson

There is growing evidence that Wilson may not be the long-term solution at quarterback…

Even after an impressive outing, Zach Wilson continues to be the butt of jokes in all the latest NFL news and rumors. A now-viral interview clip of NBC’s Rodney Harrison trying to bait Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones into insulting Wilson was low.

In one of the oddest approaches to asking a question, Harrison uses the term “trash” to ask about Jones’ feelings about Zach Wilson. It was really a trash question regardless of whether Wilson has lived up to the lofty expectations that accompany being the former No. 2 pick in the NFL draft.

Wilson Outperformed Mahomes in a Losing Effort

Consider this: it was Patrick Mahomes, not Wilson, who threw two costly interceptions, but Kansas City was able to overcome the quarterback’s mistakes. Wilson did fumble the snap late in the fourth quarter as New York approached midfield.

Aside from the late turnover, the Jets quarterback put up impressive numbers, throwing for 245 yards and two touchdowns while completing more than 71% of his passes. Wilson’s career has been underwhelming, but the quarterback has also become the scapegoat for everything wrong with the Jets organization over the last decade.

Can We Stop Blaming Wilson for All the World’s Problems?

I’ve seen Jets fans blaming Wilson for the long wait to get their Chipotle mobile order. There is growing evidence that Wilson may not be the long-term solution at quarterback. Last week, I made the argument that the Jets would be wise to attempt to trade for a veteran like Cowboys backup Cooper Rush.

If I were to argue with myself (something I do frequently), it would be for the Jets to see what they had in Wilson this season, given the upgrades the team made to the roster last offseason. The reality is that even if the team acquired Rush, New York would not suddenly become an AFC contender. NFL Network’s Peter Schrager said it best when it comes to how Jets fans should feel about Wilson.

“You’ve got to wake up feeling far better this Monday as a Jets fan than you did last Monday,” Schrager explained during an October 2 edition of Good Morning Football. “Zach Wilson went toe to toe with Patrick Mahomes, and the building was rocking. It’s not all doom and gloom and the season might not be done just yet.”

It May Be Time for the Jets to Enter the Caleb Williams Sweepstakes

Regardless of what the front office decides, this is not a playoff team without Aaron Rodgers. Yet, here’s the dirty little secret despite an offseason full of propaganda: there was no guarantee the Jets would make the postseason, even with Rodgers.

The Jets are a perfect candidate for the Caleb Williams sweepstakes and still have their 2024 first-round pick as a result of Rodgers playing less than 65% of the snaps this season.
