Killing It!

It’s almost like when I was a player, I never felt like I did things the right way. – Tom Brady

FOX’s NFL games will have a new broadcaster in the booth this season when former New England Patriots quarterback, and seven-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady, gets his turn at the mic. The question is, will he be any good at his new job?

Tom Will Be Terrific

They called him Tom Terrific during his playing days when he routinely made NFL news, and there is little doubt he will be a compelling and welcome addition to the broadcast booth when he begins his inaugural season of a 10-year, $375 million deal with the network as its lead color commentator. Tom Brady’s net worth is already around $300 million so it’s not like he needs the dough—just a challenge.

He looks great, speaks well, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the game so what could go wrong, you ask? Nothing. Not a damn thing because he’s the GOAT and GOATs do GOAT things. I can’t wait for Brady’s newest chapter and he better deliver because all eyes will be upon him and there are plenty of haters who would love him to fail.

Brady got his feet wet in the booth with Curt Menefee and Joel Klatt broadcasting the UFL Championship game between the Birmingham Stallions and the San Antonio Brahmas at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis. He was solid in his unofficial debut despite the booing from the losers in the audience at the trophy ceremony who couldn’t even muster enough support to keep their NFL franchise in St. Louis.

A Case of the Jitters

Most people avoid doing whatever makes them nervous. I’m as guilty as all the other nervous Nellies out there but sometimes we have to buckle up the chinstrap and do the best we can. But what if your best isn’t enough? Disappointing yourself is tough but disappointing others who believe in you can cause sleepless nights. I guess that’s why I drink.

Tom Brady is a different breed of cat but not so different that even he doesn’t get butterflies. He’s just learned how to swat those glorified moths to the point where he does the job and delivers the goods. If you want an inkling as to how he’ll come across, just watch a three-minute clip of him discussing how he kept his superstar receiver happy with Colin Cowherd on The Herd.

Ironically, he only had one bona fide stud wide receiver during his career—Randy Moss—but he knew what to do with him and how to do it. It’s a fascinating perspective and gives the average fan a birds-eye view of how even the greatest QB in history had to placate a generational talent like Moss.

As for the jitters, Brady’s got them. That little tidbit should make the rest of us feel a bit better about our own insecurities and it also humanizes the man. Here’s what he had to say about his FOX NFL debut coming up on September 8th when the Cleveland Browns take on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

Brady was asked how he was feeling about broadcasting his first game.

“It’s almost like when I was a player, I never felt like I did things the right way. There were games where I’d go in afterward and thank God [because I’d tell myself] ”I’m the worst quarterback in the NFL. Like why would they even want me to play quarterback for this team?

“And I’m sure I’m gonna feel that way here at FOX. Right after I finish a game [I tell myself] ”God… I didn’t even give them what they wanted…’”

Brady in the booth, a cocktail in my hand…I can’t wait for football!
