Time to Move On

There’s a reason we drafted him at No. 2 overall. – Woody Johnson

While it’s never been better to be a quarterback, it’s also never been harder from a mental standpoint. These players immediately become the face of a franchise if they’re drafted high enough and a lot of early 20-year-olds just can’t handle it.

Zach Wilson is one of the biggest examples.

The New York Jets used the No. 2 overall pick to draft Wilson and he almost immediately looked like a bust. Three seasons later, he hasn’t gotten any better. Wilson has all the talent a quarterback needs to be great. He’s got a big arm and is very athletic. However, he clearly can’t handle the mental side of the game.

The Jets have already given up on him and things aren’t looking too good for his future, per the latest NFL rumors.

Wilson Has a Dwindling Market

Once the Jets signed Aaron Rodgers, it was clear Wilson didn’t have a future in New York. Based on NFL news, it looks like he might not have any NFL future at all. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Wilson has a “dwindling” market of teams interested in trading for him.

“Wilson has permission to speak to teams about a trade, but his salary (a guaranteed $5.5 million) is a deterrent, not to mention his checkered body of work,” Cimini reported. “He’s probably hoping for his release, so he can find a job with no strings attached. It’ll be interesting to see how long the Jets hold out hope for a trade.”

Despite his draft status, it’s easy to understand why nobody wants him. Zach Wilson’s stats are abysmal. He’s thrown 23 touchdowns to 25 interceptions in 34 NFL games. He just can’t complete passes.

Woody Johnson Is a Wilson Fan

One of Wilson’s biggest champions is owner Woody Johnson. He still thinks the quarterback can be a star one day.

“I feel badly about Zach in some ways, because last year would’ve been the first time he could just sit back and watch a master at work, and he’s never had that,” Johnson said recently.

“He’s been in the fire from day one, and I think that’s what he needs. He needs to be in a place where he can observe for a while, and he’s got the skill, he can do everything. There’s a reason we drafted him at No. 2 overall, and I have confidence that he’ll get there, at some point.”

While it might be better for both sides if Wilson got cut outright, it doesn’t sound like Johnson is willing to do that.

“It’s possible. If we don’t trade him, we’re gonna keep him, so it’s possible that he could do it here. From his standpoint, it’s probably better if he gets to a new place and he can wipe the slate clean.”
