Reports are saying Purdy is the favorite for starting QB
According to the latest NFL news, it looks like Brock Purdy could be the San Francisco 49ers’ starting QB come Week 1 of the 2023 season. The 23-year-old resumed throwing a regulation 15-ounce NFL football during OTAs last week in Santa Clara.
After having elbow surgery on his throwing arm less than three months ago, Purdy’s return to the gridiron has been marked as a speedy one and now NFL rumors suggest that he’s the favorite to open as the starting QB for San Francisco.

“Now, based on the optimistic reports in recent weeks from Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan, Purdy is the clear favorite to open the season as the 49ers’ starting quarterback,” NBC Sports Matt Maiocco recently wrote.

Looking back at last year, Mr. Irrelevant stepped up for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13 where he led the Niners to a win over the Miami Dolphins. He then kept winning. Purdy chalked up six straight wins in the regular season before adding two more victories to his streak in the playoffs. However, en route to his ninth win, Purdy was injured in the 49ers’ first drive of the NFC Championship Game, which ended in a 31-7 loss to the Eagles.
He finished the 2022 season tossing for a remarkable 1,374 yards, 14 total touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.
Purdy isn’t the only man up for the QB1 job as he will have to compete against San Francisco’s 2021 third-overall pick, Trey Lance, and veteran QB Sam Darnold. But as long as Purdy can stay healthy through the rest of the NFL offseason, there is no reason that Kyle Shanahan wouldn’t turn to him first to be their guy.
