Mexico Embarrassed USWNT on American Soil 🥴

“The team didn’t put on their performance…” -Alex Morgan

Against the odds – literally, +800 at sportsbooks – we witnessed the Mexican national women’s soccer team triumph over their long-standing American rivals in the Gold Cup this past Monday.

USWNT, four-time world champions, surrendered to a 2-0 scoreline, thus making it the first time since 2010 that Mexican women had defeated the North American national team and the second time in history.

To add insult to injury, “El Tri” Femenil kept a clean sheet in the game and did so on American turf, resulting in the first home defeat to a CONCACAF team in 23 years!

With the United State’s 80-game undefeated streak versus CONCACAF teams coming to an abrupt end, Mexico finished top of Group A with seven points, scored the joint-most goals in the entire tournament’s group stage (10) as well as the joint-best defense (0 goals conceded).

USA’s final third attacking maestro, Alex Morgan, stated the tournament: “The team didn’t put on their performance,” … I mean? Was stating the obvious the best she had?

Despite the agonizing defeat, USWNT games continue, and USA soccer in the Women’s Gold Cup will resume in the competition playoff stage. Fortunately for the Yanks, the top two of each group qualify for the quarterfinals, thus allowing Twila Kilgore and her squad to exact revenge on their next opponents, who are yet to be decided until the remaining group stage fixtures are complete.

As USWNT news reported the nation as -420 favorites on the pre-game betting odds, their chance of success was virtually a given. But now, following a horrid run at last year’s World Cup and Monday night’s downfall to El Tri Femenil, USWNT rumors are focussed on whether or not the glory days of this team are over.

Honestly, everyone should relax. One defeat means nothing, and we’re jumping the gun a little too soon to begin speculating on a potential downfall of USWNT. However, it will be intriguing to see if the squad’s defeat boasts their confidence into gear or causes further issues during the competition’s most crucial stage – the playoffs – because there are no comebacks if the States suffer another defeat in this competition.

The United States Women’s team has won 9 of the 11 Gold Cup tournaments since its birth, with Canada being the only other nation to lift the coveted trophy. Has a wind of change arrived in the women’s CONCACAF landscape? Or is it just a glitch in the system before USWNT resumes dominance? Only time will tell!
