The Next Big Thing? 🌟

Naturally, the Yamal and Lionel Messi comparisons are beginning to surface…

Ahh, the good old days of being a sixteen-year-old teenager. Fighting acne, chasing girls, taunting teachers, and playing in the 2024 Euros final.

Hold on, wait, that last part didn’t make sense. The Euro finals??!!

Well, ladies and gentlemen, this wasn’t the scenario we may have lived in, but it’s certainly the case for Spanish international Lamine Yamal. And after “La Roja” eliminated France, the 16-year-old wonderkid has topped soccer news headlines for his efforts, one of which included a blistering shot from outside the box to level the scoring.

Man of the Match: Lamine Yamal

Last night saw the Qatar World Cup finalists, France, go head-to-head with their European neighbors, Spain. The scoreline broke when Kylian Mbappe whipped an emphatic cross onto the head of Randal Kolo Muaini, as many onlookers believed “Les Bleus” had finally kicked into gear following a disappointing tournament.

But Yamal, a Barca kid who plays on the right wing, left us in complete awe as he tied the game midway through the first half with a goal that’s been circulating soccer rumors ever since!

Not only has Yamal become the youngest player to bag a goal in the Euros’ 64-year history, but he did it exquisitely. Cutting in from the right flank, swerving between two French defenders, he brought the ball to his left foot and sent it curling past goalkeeper Mike Maignan from outside the box!

The goal was sweet, as you can see above, but his performance at the Euros has put the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mbappe to shame. From a statistical standpoint, he’s created 11 chances – third most at euros – and his completed passes and dribbling percentages have also been super-impressive.

Yamal was awarded the Man of the Match award from Spain’s semi-final clash with France, and to watch this kid effortlessly provide balls to his teammates with almost zero mistakes and a veteran-like calmness was a delight to see.

Heading to the Euro 2024 Final

Naturally, the Yamal and Lionel Messi comparisons are beginning to surface, but it’s a bit too early for that, in my honest opinion. He’s a completely different style and positional player to Messi, so let’s enjoy his evolution for the time being.

That said, he is heading to the Euro 2024 finals this weekend, one day after his 17th birthday. We wish good luck to either the Netherlands or England (they’ll need it), who’ll meet this unstoppable Spanish force on Sunday while attempting to chase Yamal up and down the wing… But not before he’s done his homework!
