An Iconic Partnership Ends 😞

It is going to look super weird for the German crest to be alongside a Nike logo.

The latest soccer news reveals the end of an era as the German national team heads for a divorce with Adidas (!). Et tu, Brute? Adidas is (probably) saying.

Yes, Germany is going checks over stripes.

The German national team announced that beginning in 2027 Nike will be making their uniforms at all levels. This ends a more than 70-year marriage between Germany and the country’s iconic apparel company.

“Awarding a contract to our future kit supplier Nike is the result of a transparent and non-discriminatory tender procedure,” Germany football federation chairman Holger Blask said, per The Athletic.

“Nike made by far the best financial offer and additionally impressed with the content of their vision, which also included a clear commitment to supporting amateur and grassroots sport, as well as the sustainable development of women’s football in Germany.”

Nike Dropped the Bag to Land Germany

Translation: Nike just dropped the bag to make our gear and patriotism can pay the rent. Basically, Blask is saying they got a godfather offer to make what will likely be a controversial decision in Germany.

If you are a fan of Germany’s traditional kits with Adidas, you still get a few more years of the duo. Turns out the 2026 World Cup will be somewhat of a grand finale for Adidas and Germany. No pressure, Adidas.

Here’s the thing, when mentioning the Adidas-Germany partnership, everyone mentions the back-to-back World Cup kits in 1990 and 1994. It’s awesome these iconic jerseys exist, but that was more than 30 years ago, bro.

The First German Jersey With Nike Will be Super Weird

There’s no way around it. Initially, it is going to look super weird for the German crest to be alongside a Nike logo.

It is reminiscent of Emmitt Smith in a Cardinals uniform, Patrick Ewing in a Sonics jersey, or Freddie Freeman in a Dodgers shirt (still weird to me). Eventually, we will all get over it, and I am optimistic Nike will come up with some sick looks.

I somehow still have faith even though Nike has completely botched the USMNT kits over the last decade. Maybe USMNT and Germany should do one of those “trading places” shows where the two squads switch suppliers.
