A Plain Old Mask? 😓

We’ll do all we can to ensure that he’ll be available [Friday]. – Didier Deschamps

Kylian Mbappe continues to make headlines in soccer news, this time not for his much-anticipated move to Real Madrid but for a recent injury that has sparked widespread discussion.  Mbappe took a knock in the first Euro 2024 game against Austria, but don’t worry—he’s not going anywhere!

Mbappe’s Iconic Mask

After a clash with Austria’s Kevin Danso, Mbappe suffered a broken nose that forced him out of the game. To help him make a speedy return, a custom mask was designed just for him.

Mbappe took to social media, asking fans for some mask inspiration, and the internet did not disappoint! Hilarious suggestions, including “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle,” flooded his feed, showcasing Mbappe’s great sense of humor about the situation.

The final mask, featuring the colors of the French flag and the national team emblem, quickly caught everyone’s attention. Fans were moved by the sight of Mbappe training in his patriotic mask, seeing it as a symbol of national unity and pride.

While fans were excited to see Mbappe rock a custom mask, UEFA has some style rules in play. Their regulations state that masks must be single-colored and free of team or manufacturer logos. Therefore Donatello will have to take the field with a simple mask.

Mbappe Joins the Masked Club!

This isn’t the first time a mask has graced the beautiful game! South Korea’s Son Heung-min rocked a similar look during the 2022 World Cup after an injury, and Germany’s Antonio Rudiger donned a mask at Euro 2020 soccer games.

But perhaps the most famous masked marvel is Dutch legend, Edgar Davids. His protective eyewear due to glaucoma surgery became a signature style, proving that safety and fashion can go hand-in-hand on the pitch.

Is Mbappe Fit To Play?

The big question on everyone’s mind is whether Mbappe will be fit to play against the Netherlands. Manager Didier Deschamps has provided some optimism, noting that Mbappe has been making good progress.

“Everything is going well, after the shock we had,” Deschamps said. “He was able to take part in some light exercises, and everything is evolving in the right direction. We’ll do all we can to ensure that he’ll be available [Friday].”

While Mbappe’s availability remains uncertain, Deschamps has options, including Kingsley Coman, Randal Kolo Muani, and Bradley Barcola, to fill in if needed. Meanwhile, the Dutch team, led by Ronald Koeman, will be looking to improve their performance after a somewhat lackluster showing against Poland.
