Unstoppable!
LV Aces superstar, A’ja Wilson, made WNBA news again by registering her eighth consecutive 25-point game in her team’s 103-99 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night.

Wilson Dominating Again
Although all eyes have been focused on rookie Caitlin Clark, there’s an even more compelling reason to watch WNBA games this season and it comes in the form of a 6’4” package named A’ja Wilson. The Las Vegas Aces’ perennial All-Star might be a new name to those who have recently hopped aboard the WNBA bandwagon but for those who’ve been fans before the recent tsunami of viewers, A’ja Wilson is a pretty big deal in women’s basketball.

On Thursday night the defending champs edged the Phoenix Mercury, 103-99, but it was the dynamic duo of A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young who made it happen. Young would lead all scorers with 34 points but it was Wilson who bucketed 32 and cleaned the glass all night, ending with 15 rebounds and was perfect from the charity stripe in hitting 11-of-11 free throws.
Wilson and Young became the first duo to score 30 points apiece in a game this year and only the third duo to accomplish the feat in Aces history. The Vegas Aces’ roster is among the best in the league but the team has been struggling this season despite Wilson’s phenomenal individual performances. The Aces are going for a 3-peat this season but with a record of 6-5 in the middle of June, they are hardly looking like championship timber.

MVP No. 3?
A’ja Wilson’s stats include a league-leading 28.6 points per game and is currently third in blocks with 2.6 per contest, trailing only Seattle’s Ezi Magbegor and LA’s Cameron Brink with 2.9 blocks each. Wilson’s litany of awards is impressive by any standard and here is just a snapshot:
- 2× WNBA Champion (2022, 2023)
- 5× WNBA All-Star (2018–2020, 2022–2023)
- WNBA Rookie of the Year (2018)
- WNBA Most Valuable Player (2020, 2022)
- WNBA Defensive Player of the Year (2022, 2023)
- WNBA Finals Most Valuable Player (2023)

My talented colleague, Jonathan Adams, did a nice writeup of Wilson last week when she became the first player in WNBA history to register 35+ Points, 10+ rebounds, and 5+ steals in a game.
And if that wasn’t enough A’ja Wilson became the first WNBA player to average 25 points, 10 boards, and three blocks over nine consecutive games. Those are jaw-dropping numbers but much is expected of the Aces this season and if their middling ways continue, it could adversely impact Wilson’s chances of a third MVP Award.

However, Las Vegas will certainly welcome talented veteran guard, Chelsea Gray, and her 15.3 points per game average from last year. Gray has been sidelined this season with an injured left foot she suffered in Game 3 of the 2023 WNBA Finals. When she does return, expect the Aces to improve and A’ja Wilson’s odds of copping her third MVP to be that much better.
