Angel Reese vs WNBA Salaries: Round ???

I have to keep that to myself… sorry… – Angel Reese

Angel Reese has made one thing very clear: she does not get paid enough to keep her mouth shut.

During the last regular-season game of Unrivaled’s inaugural season, Reese suffered a hand injury that kept her out of the playoffs. Rose BC went on to win the championship without her, which meant Reese got to sit on a plane, do absolutely nothing, and still collect a $50,000 bonus. Life’s not fair, but if I were her, I wouldn’t be complaining.

Except she did!

In recent WNBA news, Reese took to X to celebrate her latest payday, posting, “50K NEED DATTTTT.” Sydney Colson, never one to miss a chance to stir things up replied, asking Reese if she needed help spending it. Reese then hit her with, “Sorry to break it to you, but I’m on a rookie contract & that 50K was a little more than half of my contract so I have to keep that to myself… sorry :(”

If you keep track of these kinds of things, Reese’s WNBA salary for 2024 was $73,439, which means that this $50K bonus was, in fact, a huge chunk of her actual contract. And while some (not me) might suggest living somewhere cheaper than an $8,000-a-month apartment, I do see the point here. An upstart league, with six teams and 3-on-3 rules, is managing to pay players more than the WNBA, which just signed a $2.2 billion TV deal. That’s insane.

Of course, there’s the issue of roster sizes (Unrivaled teams are much smaller) but the money disparity is still wild. Reese reportedly earned over $200K for playing in Unrivaled, on top of her prize money, which is way more than she makes playing WNBA games.

And listen, I don’t think Colson literally meant “give me the $50K,” but knowing Reese, there was no way she was passing up the chance to point out how little the WNBA is paying her (or go on strike about it).

Looking Ahead to the WNBA Season

With the 2025 WNBA season creeping up, the whole “why do I make more in Unrivaled than the actual WNBA” conversation isn’t going anywhere. Expect plenty of WNBA rumors and messy debates when contract negotiations start heating up. But until then, if you’re looking to throw some money on the season, here’s where the odds stand:

  • New York Liberty +250
  • Minnesota Lynx +400
  • Chicago Sky +7500

Let’s just say Angel Reese might want to place a bet to make up for that rookie contract because Angel Reese stats will only take her so far.
