Rookie Card, Record Price!

Is a testament to her impact on the sport… – Ken Goldin

The latest WNBA news reveals that sports cards are SO back. At least there are some rich people willing to throw money at pictures on cardboard.

I’ve never felt so old as trying to read up on the sports card game with terms like “Blue Viper” being thrown around. This sounds more like a fancy card than a Caitlin Clark item, but I digress.

Clark’s special edition Panini rookie card just sold for nearly $235,000. It is a 1-of-1 which I like to think of myself as well. Now, Caitlin Clark’s stats not only include her play on the court but also making history in the sportcard market.

Caitlin Clark Holds the Record for the Priciest WNBA Card

Clark now holds the record for the most expensive WNBA card ever, crushing her own record of $97,000 set in October by another Panini card. It is the second-highest sale for a female athlete falling just short of Serena Williams’ record of $266K.

“Caitlin Clark has not only elevated the entire league, she’s inspired a new generation of trading card collectors,” said Ken Goldin, founder and CEO of Goldin Auctions. “This record-breaking sale — the second highest women’s sports card sale of all time, and the highest value achieved for a WNBA card — is a testament to her impact on the sport.”

Clark’s Card Sold for Three Times of the Star’s WNBA Salary

One record Clark is not breaking is her remarkably low WNBA salary. Clark earned about $75,000 from her rookie salary with the Indiana Fever.

In other words, Clark earned less money than a random guy trying to sell you car insurance. Clark’s card sold for more than three times the star’s WNBA salary.

Don’t feel bad because Clark is still stacking bands while playing WNBA games. Sportico estimated that Clark set a record with $11.1 million of endorsement earnings.

What is clear, WNBA stars like Clark and Angel Reese are going to keep earning bags of cash from business ventures until The W catches up with its actual pay scale.
