If y’all don’t give us what we want, like we sitting out… – Angel Reese

We are about two months away from the 2025 WNBA season, which should be the most anticipated ever after the league enjoyed record-setting success a year ago thanks to the arrival of record-setting rookies like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.

But while Clark shined as the WNBA Rookie of the Year and can make a ton of money with endorsement deals, Reese is echoing the thoughts of some lesser-known WNBA athletes that they are still underpaid with their player salaries.

Should the Wnba Be Worried?

On a recent podcast, Reese even seemed to threaten sitting out WNBA games if a larger salary is not on the table for her and other players. “If y’all don’t give us what we want, like we sitting out,” Reese said.

Reese later clarified her comments to clear up confusion that she didn’t actually mention what NBA players make. That was the result of the NBA Centel, a parody account on X/Twitter, spreading fake quotes that Reese said WNBA players should be making as much or even more than their male NBA counterparts.

Here is what the fake quote said:

“If you think about it, our shorter season makes our games more valuable, and some of us play at a higher level than some NBA players. It’s simple math.”

So, she didn’t make a terrible comparison to the NBA after all. With that said, while the demand for a higher salary seems reasonable, Reese and other players must realize the WNBA is still growing and still has not turned a profit. According to many reports, the WNBA lost about $40 million in the 2024 season despite the records for attendance and TV ratings.

It takes time to grow these things. The best you can do is keep getting better and helping to put the best product on the court possible. In fact, that’s the area where Reese could clearly use some work before fans start betting on the 2025 WNBA season.

Reese Getting Heckled Before the Season Even Starts

Reese showed a lot of promise in her WNBA rookie season as a dominant rebounder. The Angel Reese stats show she averaged 13.1 boards per game and set a league record when she had 15 straight double-doubles.

But Reese also gained notoriety during her season for missing a lot of shots at point-blank range, leading to an inflated number of offensive rebounds. Her team also was just 6-9 during her double-double streak, a rarity to see a player post a losing record with double-doubles in the WNBA.

Recently, Reese started playing in Unrivaled, a 3×3 women’s basketball league where she plays for Rose BC. Lowlights of Reese seemingly regressing and missing shots even more egregiously at the rim have surfaced this past week, leading to more criticism of Reese as she seeks a higher salary for her playing WNBA games.

Yikes. I know any Angel Reese betting specials involving rebounding could be great value given the way she loves rebounding her own misses, but I’m staying far away from her scoring a lot of points or her team winning a lot of games.

No one’s going to boycott playing in WNBA games. The WNBA revenue growth will come, but let’s see some on-court growth from Reese first before she asks for a big raise.
