This has been a rough season for Boston, to say the least. They come into the series with one of the worst records in the American League. They will not get a single day off after losing four straight to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Without any chance of physical or mental recuperation, they will immediately play against another fearsome opponent, the New York Yankees. The Yankees head into the series with one of the best records in the American League. They’ve been getting into a bit of a groove after two straight wins against the Atlanta Braves.

Below we’ll dive into the latest news and statistics of these teams to help you weigh the odds and place a winning bet.

Red Sox Play for Last Place

You know you’re having a sad season when the trendiest hashtag circulated amongst your fans is #TankforKumar. With their winning percentage hovering around .333, fans are already looking to next season in the hopes their team will come in last place in order to get the No. 1 pick in the MLB Draft.

Fans and coaches alike have their eyes set on Vanderbilt pitching sensation Kumar Rocker, who was given the honor of 2019 College World Series Most Outstanding Player and is predicted to be the top pick for next season’s draft.

The only team with a worse record than Boston is the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are sitting at 4-13. The Red Sox current record is 6-13. With so many variable happening due to COVID-19, it could end up being a strange and awkward road to last place for the team from Boston.

To add to the intrigue, let’s take a look at ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel’s Twitter account, which quoted the agreement between the Players’ Union and the MLB in March, “In the event that each Club plays less than 81 regular-season games in 2020, the Office of the Commissioner shall have the right, after conferring in good faith with the MLBPA, to modify the Draft order.”

Without any definitive arrangement, this could mean anything. With 60 games slated to be played by each team this regular season, who knows if they will have a lottery or look at previous seasons as well in order to determine the draft.

With so much uncertainty you would hope that they aren’t going to tank. These are professional athletes at the end of the day, right? Promoting a losing culture is not the way to get a winning team.

Still, the numbers speak louder than fancy lawyer words do. Their pitching is arguably the worst in the league. They are currently ranked 26th in starter ERA (5.24). Out of 18 games played as of writing they have allowed 95 runs and 169 hits. They’ve allowed a whopping 25 home runs so far this season.

On offense, they are doing better and are currently rank No.18. They are hitting .249.

When you take average hitting and well below average batting you get a team that will continue to struggle the rest of the season. Maybe the fans are right, #TankforKumar?

Yankees Will Look to Repeat Red Sox Sweep

This year, New York has one simple goal: make it to the World Series. Last year, the Yankees were defeated by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series, narrowly missing making an appearance in the World Series for the first time in a decade.

Boasting one of the best rosters in baseball, the Yankees have been living up to expectations and are currently in the mix with the top three teams in the American League. They are currently trailing the Oakland A’s.

An unfortunate development this year has been the return of Giancarlo Stanton to the injury list. Last year, Stanton was plagued with injuries and despite the extra time off, he is back on the bench. Replacing him has been an impressive Clint Frazier. It’s a testament to the depth of this team.

Frazier, who is only 25 years old, has a career average of .254 batting average, 16 home runs and 56 RBI’s over 124 Major League games.

The Yankees took another blow Friday when slugger Aaron Judge went on the IL with a calf problem.

There’s not a lot more to be said about this time other than they are a force to be reckoned with. Keep an eye on them as the season progresses. Their odds for winning the pennant are looking great this season.

Head to Head

These teams will be playing their second series of the year already. Two weeks ago, they played three games, a series the Yankees swept, 5-1, 5-2, and 9-7.

Over three games they beat them, 19-10, as far as runs scored. To break this down more simply, their records are almost identically inversed. They are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
There’s no question here, the Yankees are the far superior team. They are scheduled to play four straight over the next handful of days. It’s possible that the Red Sox might sneak in a win but the odds are stacked against them and we will most likely the New York dominate Boston again.
