Athletics Break Bank Signing Luis Severino to Franchise Record 3-Year $67M Deal
The A’s Are Making Early Money Moves for 2025, Signing Severino to a Three-Year $67M Deal
A’s Are Done With Bargain Bin Deals
The Athletics are not playing around looking towards their first year away from Oakland. As MLB news reported, the A’s, who are gearing up to play in Sacramento, California, before their definitive move to Las Vegas reached an agreement with former New York Yankees and Mets starting pitcher on a three-year, $67M deal including a $10M signing bonus and an opt-out option after the 2026 season.

Showing he’s a class act, Luis Severino took no time to thank the Mets organization and its loyal fanbase for what he called an “incredible season” with New York.

So, what’s next for the Dominican ace and the A’s?
Severino’s Deal Causes Shockwave in MLB
It’s safe to say the news of Sevy joining the A’s caused some serious shockwaves around the league. Let’s face the facts here. Not even the most prominent MLB predictions expert could have expected an aggressive move like this from the A’s happening.

It’s clear Severino still has plenty of gas left in his tank. Looking at his numbers from last season, Sevy was a pivotal piece in the Mets’ run in the second half of the season to score an MLB playoffs berth.
We all know Grimace was the first and most important, but Severino also played a significant role.

For now, as everything returns to normality and Severino trades New York for Sacramento for the time being, if I’m the A’s, I would look at myself in the mirror, put Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” in the background and continue beefing up my roster for next season.
Out With the Old, In With the New
So, what’s next for all parties involved in this deal? For the A’s, finding a potential No.1 starter for their rotation will go great. Pairing a veteran like Sevy to lead a rotation where 2nd-year pitchers like Joey Estes and Mitch Spence will be looking to establish themselves as locks in the team’s rotation could pay big dividends.
Also, it wouldn’t hurt if the A’s hit the market once more and tried to find another top-tier starter in the free-agency market. MLB rumors have been circulating that the team was looking to sign another pitcher before moving in for Severino, so why not revisit that idea?
Considering the A’s are entering their money-spending era, here’s a crazy idea. What if they took a few more of those millions apparently lying around waiting to be spent and used them to sign yet another former Mets ace looking for a new home? Somebody like Sean Manaea, who just happened to start his career in the pros with the A’s?

I know it’s a long shot, like taking the A’s last season as part of an MLB picks and parlays ticket. But if the A’s are all in for spending money and romanticizing becoming great again, Manaea coming home would make perfect sense.
