Bronx Bombers Duo Tops AL MVP Odds

Shohei Ohtani is out of the running to reclaim his American League title this year. Following his record-breaking 62 home runs in 2022, Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees leads the MVP betting odds at +550. Hot on his heels, however, is his new teammate, Juan Soto, who is closely trailing with odds of +600. Judge’s lingering abdominal issue have kept him out of spring training, but first start will come on Friday.

Since Vladimir Guerrero’s 2004 season with the Angels, no player has clinched the MVP award in their debut season with a new team. Yet, at just 25 years old, Soto brings a compelling case, boasting four top-10 MVP finishes in his career.

Updated MLB news suggests Judge should be fit for Opening Day. Although a potential IL stint may not disqualify him from award contention, it could disadvantage him, especially if Soto begins the season on a strong note.

AL MVP Odds

The Favorite

Aaron Judge, New York Yankees (+550)

Two years prior, Aaron Judge showcased a stellar performance with a .311 average, 62 home runs, 131 RBIs, and a 10.6 WAR, rightfully earning the AL MVP title. Given his prowess at the plate, it’s understandable why he’s once again the MLB odds front-runner for the MVP.

However, Judge’s susceptibility to injuries raises concerns. He was limited to just 106 games in 2023 due to health issues. His history of injuries suggests it might be a matter of time before he faces another setback.

A bet online on Judge means hoping any potential injuries are minor. However, there are wiser investments in this market, considering the wealth of talent in the American League, that might offer more attractive odds. Judge is a world-killer when healthy, but his durability has been a constant issue.

The No. 1 Contender

Juan Soto, New York Yankees (+600)

If you take anything away from this article other than AL MVP Vegas MLB betting odds, it should be that the Yankees have the most impressive one-two combo in the AL now that Ohtani and Mike Trout are on different teams.

Soto is embarking on a new chapter in his career. For the first time, he will play for an American League team after spending his first five seasons with the Nationals and then moving to the Padres. At 25, the slugger’s shift from Petco Park to Yankee Stadium is anticipated to significantly boost his performance.

Despite playing in one of the most pitcher-friendly environments, Soto has impressively hit a career-high 35 home runs, maintaining a .275 average and a .410 on-base percentage. In 2019, he nearly matched his personal best with 110 RBIs, further underscoring his offensive prowess.

In contrast to Judge, Soto’s health adds to his appeal as he participated in all 162 games with the Padres, highlighting his exceptional durability. His consistent availability, evidenced by playing at least 151 games annually since 2021, supports his reliability.

Given these factors and his standing as one of MLB’s most formidable left-handed hitters, Soto’s prospects at Yankee Stadium look incredibly promising. Expectations are high that he will set personal records without a hitch in the 2024 season.

Between him and Judge, Soto is a better MLB pick to win the title at the end of the season.

The Longshot

Gunnar Henderson, Baltimore Orioles (+1600)

Henderson, last year’s MLB Rookie of the Year, made a significant mark in his debut season. He boasted a .255 average, 28 home runs, and 82 RBIs, alongside a notable WAR of 6.2, ranking him seventh among position players. His fielding prowess is undeniable, as evidenced by his Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR) of 7.4, which positions him at the top among third basemen and shortstops, and fourth overall in the league. This solidifies his comprehensive skill set, showcasing no discernible weaknesses in his game.

At just 22, Henderson’s adaptability and increasing comfort at the plate suggest that his trajectory is only ascending. His dual-threat capability, excelling offensively and defensively, makes him a legit candidate for the MVP award, particularly as a critical player for one of baseball’s most compelling young teams.

While teammate Adley Rutschman, the first overall pick of the 2019 draft, also presents a strong case with MLB odds of +1200, his path to the MVP as a catcher poses more significant challenges. This contrast enhances the appeal of betting on Henderson, whose complete game and significant role offer an enticing value for the 2024 MVP race.

Given these factors, Henderson emerges as a compelling dark-horse candidate for the AL MVP.
