St. Louis has won four of the five games against the Cubs this season and won both games at home. The Cubs were 8-5 against the Cardinals last season with four of those wins coming at home. Each of the last four games between the National League Central Division rivals went under the total.

St. Louis, fifth in the latest National League power rankings, has been favored in five of the previous home six games against the Cubs. The Cardinals are just 13-15 as a home favorite this season. That is still better than a 14-23 record as a road underdog for the Cubs not including Thursday’s game. St. Louis has a 10-18 mark against the run line as a home favorite. Even during a difficult season, the Cubs are 24-13 against the run line as the road underdog.

When looking at our odds to win the World Series, the Cardinals are sixth at +5000, while the Cubs are well back at +15000.

Cubs vs Cardinals Series Predictions

Power Shortage Could Impact Betting Odds

Home runs have been hard to come by for the Cardinals and Cubs. Chicago headed into Thursday’s series finale with 25 home runs in the last 26 games while the Cardinals have 28 home runs in their previous 27 games.

Twelve of those St. Louis home runs have come off the bats of either Alec Burleson or Paul Goldschmidt while Ian Happ leads the Cubs with eight home runs during that stretch.

Goldschmidt and Paul Pages each have homered twice against the Cubs this season. The other St. Louis hitters have gone 138 at-bats without a home run.

Happ has all three of the home runs for the Cubs against the Cardinals in 2024.

Lack of Run Support Hurting Cubs’ Pitching Staff

Perhaps having a stingy pitching staff isn’t all it is cracked up to be.

Heading into Thursday’s action, four of the five teams with the lowest team ERAs over the last 30 days have losing records.

The Cubs are on that list with a 12-14 record despite having a 3.61 ERA. It helps that six relief pitchers haven’t allowed a run during that stretch.

Unfortunately, the pitchers expected to start the first two games in the series have been struggling a bit with Kyle Hendricks 1-3 with a 4.76 ERA over his last five games and Hayden Wesneski 1-2 with a 5.59 ERA with 11 walks over his last 19.1 innings.

Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn are among the probable starting pitchers for St. Louis in the series struggling a bit in recent starts.

Cubs vs Cardinals Injury Update

There are 10 pitchers for the Cubs on the injured list but only Yency Almonte is expected to miss the rest of the season so the All-Star break could be good news for the Cubs.

Cody Bellinger is questionable for the Cubs. He leads Chicago with 84 hits.

Infielder Tommy Edman and catcher Ivan Herrera are on the injured list for the Cardinals.

Cubs vs Cardinals Betting: Will More Games Land Under the Total?

Seven of the last eight games between the Cubs and the Cardinals have seven runs or less scored. The lone exception was a wild 7-6 win by the Cardinals on May 25 when nine pitchers combined to allow 27 hits.

Despite having a losing record on the road, the Cubs covered in 27 of the first 47 games away from home while St. Louis is just 23-21 against the run line at home.

The good news for MLB betting fans and the Cubs is that no left-handed pitcher is expected to start in the series as Chicago is just 6-13 versus lefty starters.

Even after being swept in a doubleheader by the Royals on Wednesday, St. Louis is 17-10 over its last 27 games so it is hard to pick against the Cardinals.
