Is Cortes A Risky Bet To Lead NY To A Win?

On the other side of the hill, NYC’s definition of an underdog himself, Cortes. A 36th-round draft pick who’s danced with destiny, Cortes is living, breathing, pinstriped proof that grit can take you places, and a little shimmy in your pitch never hurt anybody.

New York’s fan-favoured lefty, just like Valdez would love nothing more than to replicate his 2022 successes. Having pitched 158.1 innings with a 2.44 ERA, 0,92 WHIP and 163 K’s to 38 walks, Cortes saw his progression be cut drastically short in 2023, only having 12 starts because of a rotator cuff injury.

Finishing out last season with a 4.97 ERA over just 63.1 innings of work, many came to doubt if “Nasty Nestor” was a one season hype train kind of pitcher, but now, with Cortes ready to make huge waves once again in 2024, hopes of a career reboost are high in the Bronx.

While most baseball experts continue to find difficulties trying to figure out Cortes’ true pitching style, especially with how he constantly works on different arm angles and delivery systems, leaving smaller and smaller error margins to truly asses his skills, it will be up to NY’s opening day ace to shut critics down and give pinstripe fans what they want, a strong first win on the road in 2024.

Is Betting On Valdez To Start 2024 Strong The Way To Go?

Now come on, it’s no time to be selling these lefties short, folks! On the one hand there’s Valdez, one of Houston’s elite aces with a fastball as dangerous as it is smooth. Framber is the literal definition of a non-stop pitching machine for the Astros, having pitched the fifth-most innings of any starting pitcher over the past couple of seasons.

Having recorded double-digit victories in his past three seasons, his 2023 numbers, where he amassed a 12-11 record, with a 3.45 ERA in 198 innings of work played a murky contrast against his 2022 digits, where Valdez ended up with a 17-6 record, with a 2.82 ERA and 194 strikeouts in 201.1 innings pitched, earning an AL All-Star nod, and finishing fifth overall in the AL Cy Young Award Race.

As Houston has come to understand, Valdez is the kind of pitcher that will bring as much volume for a starting pitcher as desired. For now, all the Astros can do is hope he can once again find his 2022 form, all while leading them to a strong first home win of the season against New York.
