Dodgers vs Braves Series Picks, Props & Predictions

  • The Braves have a lot of work to do as they are nine games out of first place.
  • The Dodgers have a healthy five-game lead over the Diamondbacks in the NL West.
  • The Dodgers are 3-0 against the Braves this season.

I circled this series on my calendar earlier in the season as one to watch for, as it would be a potential preview of the National League Championship Series. Cut to the present and the Atlanta Braves aren’t currently a playoff team while the Los Angeles Dodgers have the second-best record in the league and are more likely to face off against the Philadelphia Phillies for the pennant.

The Braves, meanwhile, are one game off the Wild Card race behind the New York Mets. There is still time to make up ground, but this series has to go very well for Atlanta if they hope to make a playoff run. Both teams are -115 to win the series.

Below, I break down each of the four games in this series, make some MLB picks for the weekend ahead and share some prop predictions.

Dodgers vs Braves Series Breakdown

Game 1: Landon Knack vs. Spencer Schwellenbach

Game 1 of this series features two lesser-known pitchers, but that doesn’t mean this opening tilt lacks excitement. Neither pitcher has faced the other team before, so there are no matchup stats to fall back on. We know that the first time batters see a pitcher, it favors the guy on the mound. Therefore, I like this game to be an NRFI bet and maybe an F5 inning play under 4.5 runs at -110 odds on Friday.

Game 2: Jack Flaherty vs Chris Sale

The second game of the series could end up being the closest to a pitcher’s duel we will get this weekend. Jack Flaherty (12-6, 2.86) and Chris Sale (16-3, 2.38). While the stats look similar at first glance, Sale is having a much better year.

It’s so good that his MLB odds of winning the NL Cy Young lead the pack. Sale leads the MLB in wins, ERA and strikeouts and ranks sixth in WHIP. Flaherty isn’t exactly a slouch, though, with the fourth-best ERA in the league and seventh-best WHIP.

I think the Los Angeles Dodgers will take this game, but my best bet online is on the total to go Under the betting total.

Game 3: Walker Buehler vs Charlie Morton

With Walker Buehler (1-5, 5.95) on the mound Sunday, Charlie Morton (8-8, 4.11) and the Atlanta Braves are in an excellent spot to take Game 3 in MLB predictions. Buelher has been a disaster this season and with a 6.30 ERA in September, it’s only getting worse. To make matters worse, Buehler has a rough .246 average against the current Braves. Orlando Arcia has been particularly effective, with a .545 average and two home runs in 11 at-bats.

Game 4: Yoshinobu Yamamoto vs Max Fried

The series finale is another great pitching duel between Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-2, 2.88) and Max Fried (9-9, 3.46). Fried has much experience against the Dodgers, with a solid .222 average in 180 at-bats against the current LA lineup. Max Muncy is one exception, with two home runs and a .313 average in 16 trips to the plate.

Key Players in Prop Betting Markets

Here are a few names and relevant stats to consider for BetUS prop betting in the Dodgers vs. Braves series:

  • Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers): Shohei Ohtani appears to be headed for his first 50-50 season in the MLB and is worth a look in the prop market every game he plays for LA. Ohtani has +298 odds to steal a base in the series opener.
  • Chris Sale (Braves): Sale leads the MLB with 213 strikeouts and consistently exceeds his prop odds in that department. He has fanned 9+ batters in four of his last seven games, and, despite the tough matchup, I’m all over him to eclipse his total in MLB prop odds on Saturday.

Question of the Day

Who is the favorite to win the NL West?

After the Diamondbacks made things interesting in August, the Dodgers have begun to pull away and hold a five-game lead in the NL West.
