Am I Dreaming? 🌠
One of the best players in the MLB…
According to MLB rumors, the Yankees have completed a trade with the San Diego Padres to add star outfielder Juan Soto. In the seven-player deal, New York acquired Soto and center fielder Trent Grisham while the Padres received right-handed pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vásquez, and Drew Thorpe along with catcher Kyle Higashioka.

This is the biggest MLB news of the offseason so far until Shohei Ohtani decides where he’s going to play. It makes a lot of sense for the Yankees. They clearly were headed in the wrong direction and needed another star.

Aaron Judge is great but he dealt with injuries last season and that’s not the first time he had injury issues. Soto has played over 150 games in three straight seasons so he’s durable and reliable. He’ll be a good player to have if Judge goes down for any reason.
The only concern is that Soto can become a free agent next year. Considering he’s just 25, he’ll likely be getting one of the biggest contracts we’ve ever seen. We all know the Yankees have deep pockets so they shouldn’t be too concerned about losing him but it’s always possible. Regardless, it is a situation to watch, especially if the Yankees struggle again next season.
Now, let’s talk about the Padres. They probably wouldn’t have been able to retain Soto following the season but he spent less than two years with the team. The trio of Manny Machado, Fernando Tatís Jr., and Soto were supposed to take the MLB by storm. Instead, they finished with an 82-80 record last season and missed the playoffs.
Soto had a very good season and led the MLB with 132 walks. He also had 35 home runs and 109 RBIs. The Padres are clearly looking to cut costs and revamp their thinking. Building around three elite batters wasn’t enough to get them over the hump.

The Padres could be in for a year of retooling after a disappointing 2023.
