Mets Ready to Welcome Back DeGrom

Ace Right-hander Set to Make Season Debut on Tuesday

This is the time of the year when teams usually need to part with some top prospects or young players yet to establish themselves in the majors, all in the name of making a run at the World Series title.

The New York Mets pitching staff is about to get a boost from a two-time Cy Young Award winner and it won’t require any players heading to other organizations.

Mets ready to welcome back an ace

Jacob deGrom is scheduled to make his 2022 debut on Tuesday when the Mets play the second of a three-game series against the last-place Washington Nationals.

Just two weeks ago, the Mets had -165 odds to win the National League East Division title according to the MLB odds. That number is now at -225. The Mets are at +475 to win the National League pennant, which trails only the Los Angeles Dodgers. That’s pretty good stuff for a team that has missed the playoffs in each of the last four seasons and hasn’t played in the World Series since 2015.

As well explore a variety of other MLB odds here to win!

Mets 1-2 Punch Healthy – Finally

One of the most impressive parts of the New York Mets heading into August with the second-best record in the National League and a three-game lead on defending World Series champion Atlanta in the National League East standings is that it has been done with eight different pitchers starting at least one game — and none of them named deGrom.

New York has a total of 13 starts from deGrom and Max Scherzer through the first 101 games of the season. Carlos Carrasco (11-4, 3.79 ERA), Taijuan Walker (9-2, 2.79 ERA), David Peterson (5-2, 3.54 ERA) and Chris Bassitt (7-7, 3.83 ERA) have helped the Mets not just survive but prosper without their ace.

When the season began, deGrom had the best odds (+350) to win the National League Cy Young Award according to the MLB predictions. Scherzer was second at +700.

With deGrom likely to make somewhere between 10-12 starts barring any further setbacks, he isn’t among the current NL Cy Young leaders. Scherzer is tied for eighth at +4000. Miami’s Sandy Alcantara is the overwhelming current front-runner at -180 followed by reigning Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes of the Milwaukee Brewers at +550.

With veteran manager Buck Showalter calling the shots, expect the Mets to do everything possible to have deGrom available when the games mean the most – the postseason.

What to Know

There is expected to be a pitch-count limit on deGrom’s first start, probably around 80 pitches. Don’t be surprised to see the Mets err on the side of caution because an early August start against a terrible Washington team isn’t worth risking another trip to the injured list for deGrom.

The various sportsbook have the Mets’ odds to win the World Series range anywhere from +600 to +800. That is ahead of the Braves and behind only the Dodgers among National League teams.

During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, deGrom was 11-4 in 27 starts. The Mets were 19-8 in those starts. New York was shut out in two of those losses when deGrom pitched, and the team averaged just 2.3 runs in games started by deGrom during that time.

This Mets lineup is averaging almost one more run per game in 2022 than they did in 2021, so perhaps the lack of run support won’t be an issue when deGrom hits his stride.

What’s Next?

If deGrom is able to take his normal spot in the rotation, two of his next three starts would come against division rival Atlanta as the Mets attempt to hold onto first place in the NL East.

He made four starts in the minor leagues as he worked his way back to the majors. He was 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 12.2 innings at Class A St. Lucie and AAA Syracuse.

He made one rehab start in St. Lucie in 2021. Prior to that, his last appearance in the minors came in 2014.

Those who bet online and wish to put money down on deGrom to win his third Cy Young Award this season, the current odds are at +10000.
