After the disaster season the New York Mets had in 2023, I didn’t expect them to be playing meaningful games in the middle of September 2024. But here we are, with the Mets technically not out of the race to win the NL East, with the Philadelphia Phillies holding a sizable eight-game lead. I’ve seen the Mets blow seemingly insurmountable leads in the NL East race before, so what’s to say they can’t do the opposite and steal the division from Philly late in the season?
As unlikely as the Mets winning the NL East is, if they have a shot, it has to start on Friday in Philadelphia. The Mets are +3000 in our odds to win the NL East, but big wins mean taking chances on the odds board.
Let’s take a look at what this series will look like at BetUS Sportsbook.
Mets vs Phillies Series Betting Breakdown
Game 1: Jose Quintana vs Aaron Nola
If this game happened in August, I’d be all over the Phillies with Nola on the mound. He was, after all, a frontrunner to win the Cy Young Award just a few short weeks ago. However, Nola has been sloppy in his last two starts, with a 5.06 ERA in September and an 0-1 record.

Conversely, Quintana had been having a terrible August but appears to have turned things around recently. He’s not allowed more than one earned run in any of his last three starts and has 12 strikeouts in his last 11 ⅔ innings.
But don’t be fooled. His last two starts came against the Cincinnati Reds and a historically bad Chicago White Sox. Therefore, I can’t trust either starter on Friday and will lean toward the Over in Game 1 in my MLB predictions.

Game 2: Luis Severino vs Kolby Allard
Despite neither pitcher having a particularly impressive resume, this is the matchup to watch in this series. Both Severino and Allard have been on fire as the season winds down. Severino has a 1.32 ERA this month with back-to-back strong starts. He’s allowed two earned runs and tallied 13 strikeouts in his last 13 ⅔ innings. Meanwhile, Allard hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs since July and earned a W in his previous two games. If there was a game in this series to bet online for the Under, this is it.

Game 3: Undecided vs Cristopher Sanchez
As of Thursday, we don’t know who will close out this series on the bump for the Mets. While it’s impossible to predict an unknown entity, someone will likely get called up for a spot start, or somebody in the bullpen will get the nod or short notice. Either way, my initial feeling about this game is taking the Phillies. Sanchez is having a great season and has been phenomenal lately, with two or fewer earned runs allowed in three straight trips to the mound.

Key Players to Target for Player Prop Bets
Here are a few names and relevant stats to consider for MLB prop betting in the Mets vs. Phillies series:
- Pete Alonso (Mets): Alonso is one of the most dangerous power hitters in the league and gets a shot at Aaron Nola this weekend. The matchup is notable because, in
49 at-bats, Alonso has five home runs and a .327 average against Nola.

- Kyle Schwarber (Phillies): The king of leadoff home runs has been on fire this month, hitting an absurd .417 with 7 home runs in 36 at-bats. Any time Mr. Schwar-bomb is hitting for average, watch out.
