  • The Padres and Diamondbacks are each one game above .500 coming out of the All-Star break but remain long shots to catch the Dodgers in the division.
  • Curious about the Rockies? Colorado has the third-worst record in the league and will be sellers at the trade deadline.
  • Let’s check the BetUS MLB odds and take a look ahead at the NL race!

With the All-Star break in the rearview, it’s time to hone in on the top teams in contention as we approach the MLB trade deadline and the last stretch of the season. There’s no argument over the top team in the National League West. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been the heavy favorites in NL West odds from the start of the season and have only increased their stranglehold on the division.

5 Best Odds to Win the NL: Too Early to Crown the Dodgers?

1. Dodgers (-2000)

The LA Dodgers come out of the break with the second-best record in the NL (56-41) behind only the Phillies (62-34 – best in MLB). The Dodgers entered the season as favorites to win the NL West again and have delivered to this point. Los Angeles holds a seven-game lead in the division over the Padres and Diamondbacks. Last season, the Diamondbacks finished 16 games back and the Padres 18.

The Dodgers entered the season with high expectations and are now listed at +350 in our odds to win the World Series, and that sentiment has only grown stronger as we approach the season’s final two months. They have been phenomenal all season. They have the third-most homers (129), fifth-highest batting average (.254), highest OPS (.768), and first in wRC+ (118).

Despite a litany of injuries, the Dodgers pitching staff has also managed to produce. We knew Shohei Ohtani wouldn’t be available to pitch this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but he is posting an MVP-caliber season at the plate. Only Aaron Judge in the AL has performed better at the dish in 2024.

The Dodgers injury list is extensive for a team that sits comfortably in first place. Current pitchers they are missing include; Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, Michael Grove, Emmet Sheehan, Dustin May, Brusdar Graterol, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow. That’s a load of talent currently unavailable for the reigning NL West champs.

In addition to these key arms, the Dodgers have been without Mookie Betts since June 16. Betts suffered a broken left hand after he was hit by a pitch. His timeline to return was roughly two months, which would estimate his return to the lineup in early August.

With the Dodgers’ extensive number of players on the Injured List, the first few weeks out of the break will likely determine if they will be crowned NL West champs for the 11th time in the previous 12 seasons.

Bet on Dodgers (-2000) to win the NL West

2. Padres (+1800)

The Dodgers are vulnerable with so many significant pieces on their injury report. The Padres are the next team in NL West odds, but I’m not convinced they have enough to catch them. San Diego is expected to be active at the trade deadline and they have reportedly already extended an offer to the White Sox for possibly the biggest fish of the deadline, Garrett Crochet.

If the Padres are to push the Dodgers to the limit, they must acquire another ace-caliber arm like Crochet. Only a few believed in the Padres after they traded Juan Soto to the Yankees in the offseason, but they are staying in the mix.

Under general manager A.J. Preller, the Friars are typically one of the busiest teams at the trade deadline. They already traded for Luis Arraez and Dylan Cease in 2024. However, seeing a path to the top of the NL West is difficult, while Fernando Tatis Jr. remains out with a stress fracture in his leg.

3. Diamondbacks (+2200)

The Diamondbacks are heating up, winning 10 of their last 15 overall. The defending NL champs have been one of the hottest teams in the league since June 1. Arizona’s record (49-48) isn’t up to par with how they have performed at the plate. They still have one of the most talented lineups in MLB and are dangerous at Chase Field. Ketel Marte is having another terrific season.

Over the last month, the D-Backs have been in the top five in nearly every offensive category.

The Snakes have spent most of the season on the bubble of playoff teams. If they keep up their momentum from the break before the trade deadline and continue gaining ground, we should expect them to be active buyers. However, they will sell if they struggle on their upcoming road trip out of the All-Star break against the Cubs and Royals. Arizona entered the season second in MLB betting odds to win the NL West behind the Dodgers, and there is still a chance they can chase down the division title and shock the world again.

4. Giants (+8000)

The Dodgers are the largest favorite among any of the six divisions in baseball. Unfortunately for the Giants, they have dealt with a litany of injuries in 2024. Unlike the Dodgers, San Francisco lacks firepower and depth to make up for the players they are missing on the Injured List.

The Giants have a talented roster and should regroup and build for playoff contention in 2025.

5. Rockies (+50000)

The Colorado Rockies have played themselves out of contention, and they did so after just the first month of the season. The Rockies sit 22 games back of the Dodgers and own the third-worst record in the entire league (34-63), behind only the White Sox (27-71) and the Marlins (33-63). 2024 is another lost season for the Rockies, as they join the Marlins as the only teams outside the NL Wild Card race.

Colorado is in another rebuilding season, and they will be one of the top-selling teams again at the trade deadline. If you want MLB predictions, look for the Rockies to trade veterans Cal Quantrill (SP), Austin Gomber (SP), and Elias Diaz (C).
