Well, dry those drool puddles because Major League Baseball’s 2024 Opening Day has finally arrived! The marathon of a 162-game season officially kicked off last week overseas with the Dodgers and Padres beating the living tar out of each other in a Seoul-slugging, split series spectacle.

But let’s be real, those games were merely an appetizer for the true Opening Day feast coming on March 28th. That’s when all 30 big league squads, from the Yankees dynasty to the lovable Oakland underdogs, take the field with hopes and dreams as grandiose as the pristine infield chalk lines.

To celebrate Opening Day, ESPN is rolling out the red carpet with a can’t-miss Opening Night matchup between the Texas Rangers and those other Cubs from Chicago. Better yet, you don’t even have to leave your couch! Most of the regional festivity will be streamable on MLB.tv and those RSN apps you’ve missed like your very own bullpen cart buddy.

We all know the New York Metropolitans have reigned supreme as the undisputed Opening Day kings, strutting into the season with a craaazy 41-21 overall record. Not too shabby for a franchise that’s essentially a dumpster fire 9 years out of 10! Seattle’s Mariners are playing second fiddle at 29-18, which sounds about right considering their fans’ perpetual underdog mentality.

But let’s be real – when it comes to sheer Opening Day dominance, none can match the Miami Vice-level swagger of the Houston Astros and their 10-year opening salvo from 2013-2023. TEN STRAIGHT DUBS! That’s like showing up to the première of every Fast & Furious movie blasting “See You Again” with the windows down and wheels screeching.

This year continues the relatively new tradition of every single MLB squad taking the field on Day 1, just like the good ol’ days back in ’68. We’re talking full-fledged national baseball saturation with games stretching from Seattle to New York, Arizona to Toronto!

Of course, any true diamonds-in-the-rough disciple knows Opening Day is all about the Carlton-esque aces taking the mound and flirting with immortality. The OGs like Tom Freakin’ Seaver showed us how it’s done with 16(!) opening gems – the most in history for you stat nerds playing along at home. Then you had the Randy Johnsons and Steve Carltons of the world nipping at his heels with 14 apiece. Downright legendary stuff.

Naturally, last year’s debut shattered all streaming records with fans consuming an insane 172 million minutes of stellar content via MLB.tv. I don’t know about you, but my eyes are still recovering! Let’s see if 2024 can top it.

But enough chewing the fat, you’ve got beers to chill and MLB Opening Day games to bet on! Because from the gritty Bronx to the sunny LA hills, this is the moment we’ve been waiting for: the start of an unpredictable, drama-filled, athletic spectacle that reminds us why this game is so grand.
