Phillies-Orioles Series: Under Strong Bet With Top Pitchers on Hill

The National League-best Philadelphia Phillies make the short trek down I-95 to take on the Baltimore Orioles for a three-game weekend interleague series between two of the top teams in the odds to win the World Series.

The Phillies are +600 in the current MLB future odds to win it all – third lowest – and Baltimore is +900 for fifth. One of the big reasons why the two teams are expected to make a run is their pitching staffs.

Philadelphia entered Thursday’s game second in the majors with a 2.99 team ERA and Baltimore was third (3.08). That bodes well for under bettors at the sportsbook and the pitching matchups make it more likely the games will be low scoring.

The Phillies are expected to send MLB win leader Ranger Suarez (10-1) to the mound for the series opener on Friday, and the Sunday matchup could be between NL Cy Young front-runner Zach Wheeler (8-3) of Philadelphia and Baltimore’s Corbin Burnes (7-2).

  • The Phillies won two of three in the last two series with Baltimore in 2023 and 2021 if you are betting online.
  • While the Orioles’ pitching has been outstanding, over betters are 34-26 in their games this season.
  • Philadelphia’s scheduled starter Saturday, Taijuan Walker, is 4-1 in nine career starts against Baltimore.
  • Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson was batting .341 with six of his 21 homers in June, entering Thursday’s game.
  • Under bettors were 7-0 in seven Phillies games before the 8-6 loss at Boston on Wednesday.

Orioles Stingy on Mound

Baltimore has allowed just nine runs during a six-game winning streak, entering Thursday afternoon’s matchup with the Atlanta Braves.

Cade Povich gave the Orioles six scoreless innings before Colton Cowser broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run blast in the eighth for a 4-2 win on Wednesday.

Baltimore should be well armed for its battle with the Phillies this weekend, sending Kyle Bradish, Grayson Rodriguez and Burnes to the hill.

Bradish (2-0) tossed six one-hit innings last time out against Tampa Bay and Rodriguez (7-2) is 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA in June. Burnes has allowed one earned run across 21 innings in his last three starts and owns a 0.55 ERA in four career outings versus the Phillies.

Burnes is +450 to win the AL Cy Young.

Bet Schwarber, Harper to Go Deep for Phillies

Philadelphia designated hitter Kyle Schwarber’s home-run production is down from the 93 he launched in the last two seasons combined.

But the slugger is still a threat with 13 homers while his batting average (.241) and on-base-percentage (.363) are much improved. Schwarber batted .218 in 2022 and .197 in 2023. In addition, Schwarber had a five-game hit streak (two homers) through Wednesday.

Bryce Harper had also hit safely in four straight games (7-for-14) going into Thursday and boasts good numbers against Baltimore in his career. Harper was 5-for-12 with a homer versus the Orioles last year and is batting .307 in 39 career games against them.

Both could be good additions to your MLB betting for the weekend.

Phillies’ Pitching Covers Up Injuries

Philadelphia has been without injured standout shortstop Trea Turner since May 4 and increased its lead in the NL East to double digits.

Turner (hamstring) could return soon, but the Phillies are 24-10 without him since May 4. Brandon Marsh (hamstring) has also been out since June 2 and catcher J.T. Realmuto went down with a knee injury on Sunday. He could be out at least 4-6 weeks.

Philadelphia has survived with strong pitching, led by Suarez (1.81 ERA) and Wheeler, who has won his last eight decisions and is +180 to win the Cy Young. Wheeler is 1-0 with a 1.90 ERA in four career starts versus Baltimore. The Phillies have 38 quality starts – second in the majors.

The only other issue that could affect your MLB picks for the weekend is the fatigue of their trip to London hitting the Phillies at some point.
