Yankees Good Bet to Pad MLB-Best Road Win Total vs Red Sox

There doesn’t seem to be the same buzz when the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox get together these days. The Yankees look to add to their MLB-leading road win total against a Red Sox team that is struggling to win at home. The MLB betting line will give the Yankees a chance to shine as a road favorite when the three-game series opens on Friday at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox are within striking range of the final playoff spot in the American League, but they need binoculars to see the AL East-leading Yankees in the American League East.

This will be the first series of the season between the Yankees and the Red Sox. The Yankees won three of the four games the last time the teams met. However, Boston had won seven straight before that and won nine of the 13 matchups in 2023. Nine of the last 12 times the teams met in Boston, the game went under the total.

When looking at MLB futures odds, the Yankees are second only behind the Los Angeles Dodgers at +475 in the odds of winning the World Series. Boston is 20th at +10000 in the championship odds.

Yankees Turn to Red-Hot Gil in Series Opener

Luis Gil picked up the win in seven consecutive starts before not factoring into the decision when the Yankees avoided being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 6-4 win.

Gil ended April with a 4.01 ERA and a 1-1 record. Since then, he is 7-0 with an ERA of 1.05 ERA as the Yankees have won his last eight starts.

Gil missed all of last season and in seven career MLB starts entering 2024, he was 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA. Now he is showing up in the MLB odds as a strong candidate in the American League Cy Young Award race even if there are suggestions that he may not spend the entire season in the rotation.

Gil is set to pitch the series opener with Carlos Rodon (9-2, 2.93 ERA), and Marcus Stroman (6-2, 2.82 ERA) also expected to get the starts on Saturday and Sunday.

There are plenty of reasons why the Yankees have the best record in the American League after missing the playoffs last year. It doesn’t hurt that those three pitchers combined to win three games for the Yankees last season. Rodon was 3-8, Stroman was pitching for the Chicago Cubs and Gil was injured last year.

Judge Continues to Hammer Pitching of Mere Mortals

Going into Thursday’s action, four of the 11 players with the best OPS among qualified batters over the last 30 days play for the Yankees and the Red Sox.

Aaron Judge had 15 home runs, 27 extra-base hits, and a .429 batting over a 26-game stretch. For those scoring at home, that would put Judge on pace to score 193 runs to go with 69 doubles, 93 home runs and 218 RBIs over 162 games.

Yankees fans probably didn’t even care that Juan Soto was just 2-for-8 in the first three games in the series with the Kansas City Royals. After an injury kept him out of the three games against the Dodgers, they are happy to see the MVP candidate back on the field.

For Boston, Rafael Devers had nine home runs in a span of 25 games while David Hamilton hit .350 with three home runs and 11 extra-base hits during that span.

Bronx Bombers Just Fine Playing the Role of Betting Favorite

The Yankees won 39 of the first 55 games this season as the favorite after finishing 51-46 outright as a favorite a season ago. Going into Thursday, Boston was 17-16 as the underdog and 5-4 as the home underdog.

The Yankees covered in 15 of the first 25 games as a road favorite. What a difference a year makes. New York could exceed the number of games that it covered as the road favorite from the 2023 season during this series. The Yankees were just 17-20 ATS as the road favorite in 2023.

  • New York was 25-13 against the run line in its first 38 road games.
  • Boston covered in just 10 of its first 34 home games.
  • The Yankees won 40 of their first 55 games when facing a right-handed starting pitcher.
  • Boston saw only 12 of its first 34 home games go over the total.
  • Going into Thursday’s game, five of the last seven games for the Yankees against American League teams went over the total.
  • Not including Thursday’s game, eight of the last 11 matchups for Boston went over the total.

Injury Update

Outfielder Jasson Dominguez, who had four home runs in 31 at-bats for the Yankees last season, was activated off the injured list. He is currently in the minor leagues. Dominguez hit .358 with six home runs in his first 21 minor-league games this season. Reigning Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole will make his next start at Triple-A.

Infielders Trevor Story, Triston Casas and Vaughn Grissom join pitchers Chris Martin, Garrett Whitlock, and Lucas Giolito on the injured list for Boston.

What to Look for: Go With Yankees to Rake at Fenway

The Yankees are one of two MLB teams with 100 home runs, and with the Baltimore Orioles closing on New Tirj in the American League East standings, look for the Yankees to make themselves at home at Fenway Park.

Brayan Bello, expected to start for the Red Sox on Saturday, has had some recent struggles on the mound, but he allowed 13 hits and four runs in 20 innings against the Yankees in 2023.
