Picks, Prediction for Angels vs Astros on Thursday, June 1
The Los Angeles Angels’ offense is picking up steam ahead of their series opener on the road against the Houston Astros on Thursday. The Angels hit five home runs in Wednesday’s finale against the Chicago White Sox and won 12-5.
The Halos averaged 6.3 runs per game in that series and look to stay hot in Houston. Meanwhile, the Astros are getting healthy and pushing toward first place.
The MLB odds list the Astros as favorites with advantages on both the mound and at the plate.
LA Offense Buzzing
The Los Angeles Angels are a hard team to get a feel for with the ebbs and flow at the plate and on the mound. But during their recent series against the White Sox, the Angels scored 19 runs in three games. Wednesday saw an explosion at the plate with 12 runs, including five home runs. Mike Trout was among the players to go yard in Wednesday’s blowout win.

Altuve Return Boosts Astros
The Houston Astros have turned a corner after early-season injuries derailed their first month of action. Jose Altuve has made a significant impact since returning from a spring training injury with a .234 batting average and a 1.013 OPS in his first 34 at-bats. With three multi-hit games in his previous five starts, the Stros are elated to have him back. The Astros are 6-3 against the MLB spreads since Altuve’s return.

Reid Detmers (0-4, 4.93 ERA) vs Framber Valdez (5-4, 2.38)
Southpaw Reid Detmers is an obvious fade target with our MLB picks on Thursday after failing to notch a single win in nine starts. The Angels are 1-4 straight up and against the MLB spreads in Detmer’s previous five starts. With 25 hits allowed in his last 19⅔ innings of work, it’s clear that Detmers needs to work through some issues.

The Astros are on a 4-0 winning streak in Valdez’s last four starts and 4-0 against the spread. The veteran lefty struggled against the Angels last season with a 3.91 ERA and a 1-1 record in four starts.

The Astros won the first series between these American League West rivals 2-1 straight up. From an MLB betting standpoint, the Halos came out on top with a 2-1 ATS record, with both wins coming as underdogs. The Angels are 4-2 against the spread against Houston in their previous two series.
Regarding Thursday’s series opener, the Astros have a clear advantage on the mound with Detmers still searching for his first win.
