Three-Game Series Resumes
The Los Angeles Angels look to make it two straight over the host Oakland Athletics when the American League West rivals continue their three-game series on Tuesday night. Los Angeles took the series opener on Monday and is in fourth place in the division standings, two games behind the third-place Texas Rangers.
Oakland has dropped three in a row and is in last place in the AL West, six games behind the Angels. These teams have gone back and forth all season, so before you do your betting online on this game, check out our in-depth preview.
Angels Win Pitching Duel In Series Opener
The Los Angeles Angels haven’t been the best pitching team this season, ranking 17th in team ERA, but they got a great performance on Monday night. Jose Suarez pitched seven shutout innings, helping Luis Rengifo’s first-inning home run stand up in a 1-0 Angels victory.
“He’s like my brother. We grew up together,” Suarez said of Rengifo after Monday’s win. “It’s great when he hits well and I pitch well and we win.”
Los Angeles will look to get good hitting and pitching from Tuesday’s starter, Shohei Ohtani, the reigning AL MVP. Ohtani is 9-7 with a 2.83 ERA in 18 starts, striking out 152 in 105 innings to rank seventh in baseball in the category. He took the loss in his last start against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out seven and walking one.
Ohtani has also been solid at the plate, though he didn’t play in Monday’s opener after getting a little shaken up in a collision behind home plate in Sunday’s contest. He did stay in the game but had his foot stepped on by Seattle Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzales. Ohtani is batting .253 with 17 doubles, three triples, 24 home runs, 65 RBIs and 60 runs scored.
Outfielder Taylor Ward leads the Angels with a .273 batting average, and he extended his current hitting streak to six games with a hit on Monday night. Ward has hit 12 doubles, two triples and 14 home runs, drove in 38 runs and scored 50 times.
Athletics’ Offense Continues to Struggle
The Oakland Athletics got a masterful performance from Cole Irvin on the mound on Monday night, as he allowed just one run over eight innings. Unfortunately, he got no run support and lost for the second time this month despite having an ERA of 1.93 over 14 innings.
Catcher Sean Murphy has been the most consistent Oakland hitter, leading the team with a .248 batting average, but he was 0-for-4 in the opener. Murphy also paces the Athletics with 48 RBIs, hitting 26 doubles, a triple and 13 home runs while scoring 46 times.
First baseman Seth Brown was also hitless on Monday night, going 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts. Brown is batting .237 with 19 doubles, two triples, a team-high 17 home runs, 48 RBIs and 36 runs scored.
Right-hander James Kaprielian will be on the mound for Tuesday’s contest. Kaprielian is 3-5 with a 4.32 ERA in 17 starts, striking out 57 in 85.1 innings. He shut down the Los Angeles Angels in his last start, going 5.1 innings on Wednesday and allowing one run on six hits while striking out four and walking one.
Angels vs Athletics Head-To-Head
The Los Angeles Angels have a slight 7-4 advantage in the season series against the Oakland Athletics. Los Angeles has excelled against the Athletics on the road, taking four of the first five games played at Oakland Coliseum.
The Angels are looking for their first season series win since the 2018 season, having dropped the series against the Athletics in each of the last three years. Los Angeles should be a little closer to that goal if the MLB lines for Tuesday’s game are correct,.

The Los Angeles Angels should be able to keep the Oakland Athletics’ offense quiet with Ohtani on the mound. Look for another potentially low-scoring game, but the Angels will have enough to get a second straight victory
