Seattle on Two-Game Win Streak
The Seattle Mariners go for a third straight win when they open a four-game weekend series with the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Seattle took the final two games of a road series against the New York Yankees and is in second place in the AL West, 11½ games behind the first-place Houston Astros. Los Angeles has dropped two straight and is in fourth place, three games behind the third-place Texas Rangers. These division rivals have gone back and forth this season, so make sure you help inform your bet online on this contest by reading our in-depth preview of the series opener.
Angels Struggling To Get Wins
The Los Angeles Angels dropped two of three to the last-place Oakland Athletics in their last series and have lost 8 of 13 games since the All-Star break. Los Angeles made some moves at the trade deadline that showed it is building for the future, so the playoffs are not in the immediate future for this ballclub.
Left-hander Patrick Sandoval will get the start. Sandoval is 3-7 with a 3.61 ERA, striking out 97 in 89⅔ innings. He’s had success against the Mariners this season, putting up a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings over two starts.
Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani was part of the Angels’ seven-home run attack on Thursday, which still ended up being a losing effort. The reigning AL MVP had two of the seven home runs, all solo shots, as the Angels fell 8-7 to Oakland. Ohtani is batting .258 this season with 17 doubles, three triples, 24 home runs, 64 RBIs and 60 runs scored.
Mariners Use Power To Top Yankees
The Seattle Mariners have a bit of an underrated offensive lineup, but they showed what they can do on Wednesday against Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees, hitting three home runs in a six-run first inning on the way to a 7-3 win. Seattle took two of three from the Yankees on the road, giving the team confidence heading down the stretch of this season that they can play with anyone.
“We set a tone in this series, and I think we’re only going to get hotter,” Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford said after Wednesday’s win. “I think we’re going to take this series and run with it. We’ve got (the Yankees) at our place too, and that’s going to be electric as well.“
First baseman Carlos Santana had one of those three home runs, his sixth in 30 games with the Mariners after arriving in a trade from the Kansas City Royals.
Third baseman Eugenio Suarez had home runs in each of the last two games against the Yankees, adding to his team-high total of 18 on the season.
Left-hander Robbie Ray brings an 8-8 record and 4.11 ERA to the mound. Ray had 139 strikeouts in 122⅔ innings, ranking ninth in baseball in the category. He’s suffered losses in each of his last two starts, both against the Houston Astros, allowing a total of 10 earned runs over 5⅔ innings.
Angels vs Mariners Head-To-Head
The Los Angeles Angels have had the edge on the Seattle Mariners, taking five of the first eight matchups, including putting together a 4-1 record at T-Mobile Park. The Angels are trying to win the season series for the first time since the 2019 campaign.
Seattle took 11 of the 19 matchups between these division rivals in 2021 after the two teams split 10 games in 2020. The MLB lines for Friday’s series opener are heavily favoring the Mariners to find some success at home against the Angels.
