Reeling Los Angeles Stumbles into New York

Angels on Five-Game Slide

Much of the hubbub in the series between the Los Angeles Angeles and New York Yankees is surrounds the finale on Thursday, when Shohei Ohtani pitches in Yankee Stadium for the second time in his career. But the opener on Tuesday is of paramount importance for two teams limping into the set.

While the Los Angeles Angels have dropped five in a row and nine of their last 12, the New York Yankees are 5-6 over their last 11 on the heels of a 21-3 stretch. There is plenty to consider as these star-studded squads open the three-gamer and you work through your MLB picks.

Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB odds for Angels vs Yankees. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.

Los Angeles Happy to Hit Road

Ohtani tried to do it all Sunday vs. Toronto, slugging a pair of early homers. However, the Los Angeles Angels’ struggling staff couldn’t make it hold up in an 11-10 loss to the Blue Jays. That capped a four-game sweep by the Blue Jays and left Los Angeles with a 3-6 homestand.

The frustrating stretch has been marked by a difficult trend for the Angels’ bullpen, which gave up eight earned runs in 8⅓ innings over the weekend.

“A bunch of guys that have been really good collectively, all of a sudden, it’s difficult,” manager Joe Maddon told reporters. “And I don’t have any answer for that.”

A bad bullpen is something that can drive those betting online batty. Another factor in losing out on Angels bets has been a mini-slump for Mike Trout, who homered among three hits Saturday but is 4-for-21 with eight strikeouts over his last five games.

Right-hander Noah Syndergaard can make all those trends relative non-factors with a strong start in his return to New York, where he won 47 games and was often dominant in six years as a fan favorite for the Mets.

Yankees Missing Stanton

In five games since Giancarlo Stanton went on the injured list with an ankle injury, the New York Yankees have scored a total of 14 runs while batting .195. In that stretch, they’ve worked a meager six walks while striking out 39 times.

Sunday’s 4-2 loss at Tampa Bay was a maddening one, as the Yankees outhit the Rays 9-2 but still ended up on the wrong end of an American League East clash. That’s pretty hard to do, but going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position can sink any club.

Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres both homered for the New York runs, giving the team 67 blasts on the season. That ties them with the Angels for the American League lead.

Those visiting the sportsbook for this one can bank on a long ball or two (or many more).

Angels vs Yankees Head-to-Head

The Angels won the 2021 season series 4-3, but the Yankees are 13-7 vs Los Angeles since 2018 and 29-16 since 2014.

Trout is a career .368 hitter with seven home runs in 20 games at Yankee Stadium. Perhaps he breaks out of his slump against New York lefty Jordan Montgomery. Trout has a 1.319 OPS vs southpaws in 2022.

Angels vs Yankees Prediction

Syndergaard went 29-15 with a 3.29 ERA pitching in New York (including his one career start at Yankee Stadium). Trout loves the spotlight in the Bronx. As the underdog, the Angels are getting some pretty good payouts in the MLB odds against a pitcher in Montgomery who has been good but not great in May (3.76 ERA, home runs allowed in four straight).

Take a close look at the MLB lines for this one and think about whether this is a game where the Angels and their AL-leading offense can break out a bit behind Syndergaard. We think so.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels +120
